BOB Trailers in Darwin

The two major bike shops in Darwin (Cyclezone or Bikes to Fit) should be able to order these trailers for you. Last time I popped into Cyclezone (last week), they didn't have Bob trailers in stock. Darwin is a small town, so the market for such products is not there to have them on the showroom floor. They'd be the sort of product that would have to be ordered.

We will land in Brisbane and then catch a bus to Darwin where our tour on wheels will start.

Wow you're brave. You'd better carry lots of water. Darwin in October is hot (mid 30s C) and humid, building up to the wet season. By the time you get 300km south to Katherine (and for most of the rest of the trip) it'll be dry and 35 - 40 deg C + daytime temperatures with large numbers of flies trying to land on your face, ears, legs, arms, in your mouth, nose.... The distances between towns/service stations as you get further south and into the Barkley Tablands (if you go via Queensland) can be 200km and more.

I've driven between Darwin and Sydney through outback QLD (the shortest route) many times. Not much traffic and huge distances, very isolated, hot, dry, dusty and mostly flat featureless grazing country. Some big trucks/road trains (ie truck with three trailers) and in Queensland the roads get rough and narrow. It's much more scenic to cross over to the coast of QLD via Townsville however thats about a thousand km extra distance and Sydney is still more than 2 thousand km south of there. Along the coast there will be much more traffic.

Thanks a lot for your advice, a little discouraging perhaps, nevertheless very useful, we really appreciate it. Somehow we acknowledge the cons this tour we've planned implies, and hopefully we have the great chance to pervade through the Aussie mighty lands full of flies, heat and Waterless - one of the reasons we really need to back up our trip with lots of water as you mentioned, by the way do you know if we can find Extrawheel trailer in your country.

Well don't be discouraged, it sounds like a great challenge if you have the determination and time. Water, food, spares etc have to be planned carefully. Flies can be managed with a face net or perhaps even corks hanging from your helmet. I've seen the occasional touring cyclist out on those remote roads and was quite amazed. It should be a wonderful adventure with plenty of interesting characters to meet in the wild outback areas and interesting places to visit.

I've never seen the Extrawheel trailer in Australia. I did some touring myself in Tasmania last year and bought a bob trailer for the trip on ebay. I did see an Extrawheel advertised on ebay as well but it was in Europe somewhere. You might consider buying one in Europe and bringing it with you even if it means extra baggage charges. Bikes and cycling gear is relatively expensive in Australia and I've bought gear on overseas trips (in the US) at about half the price I would have to pay in Sydney.

Ok. I checked out Cyclezone on the weekend and they have a 'Yak' Bob trailer for $500 in stock. The model with suspension is an extra $100.

Dear Pod thanks a lot for the information provided, very useful, it looks like we will have to get the bob once in Darwin or try to convince the extrawheel guys to sponsor us and send it there for us (!!!.... who knows).

Dean Woods direct sell bob trailers. I found them to be the cheapest. They will mail them anywhere in OZ for $20. Lot cheaper than buying from Darwin, just have it sent to your hostel/hotel. Takes about 5 minutes to build. deanwoods.com.audeanwoods.com.auOpen ↗
