As I imagine is usually the case, it seems that he had no idea of the significance of what was taking place. Just kind of a cold wet training week with Lance and Chris, though he does mention how much better condition Lance was in by the end of the week...

Bob Roll was one hell of a rider that NEVER recieved a quarter of the recognician he well deserved. For instance, on that Fateful stage on the Stelvio in the '88 Giro, Andy Hampsten was up the road without a jacket with the conditions up there he would have been forced to retire as well as those others in contention. The DS handed Roll a jacket and told him to get it to Hampsten and Bob Roll CAUGHT UP WITH ONE OF THE BEST CLIMBERS OF THE PELOTON to give him his jacket which allowed him to continue and win the Giro. Remember that in those days there were no radios and Hampsten was all alone up there without a chance until Roll caught up. Roll was also one of the few racers to complete that horrendous stage.
For those questioning this - Bob Roll held many of the local hill climb records in the bay area and it wasn't that long ago that his record up Mt. Diablo was broken and that race is heavily contested ever year.
I'm proud to say that Bob Roll is an Oakland boy like myself and every time I see him I am glad that he's alive.
