If my technical skills matched my fitness, I would've done a bit better
;-) There's a big improvement in the past 10 months, as pointed out by
Derek, who met me during my first race. He reminded me of the mystery
chain ring grease mark on my forearm...

Derek, who met me during my first race.

Well done anyway. I didn't get a huge improvement in my off road skills
over the last year, though I am better now than I was before.

I remember a time when my big chain ring developed an infatuation with
my right calf and decided to leave love bites on it on 2 consecutive
rides.

:-) Well I had heaps of fun, although it was so cold near the
start/finish... Steven gave me [censored] for not doing another lap at night,
for which I could've placed higher... but really, I couldn't be bothered
- I was in it for the training and confidence boost, not the race. I
didn't want to push hard, stack, and then be too freaked to ride again
for ages.

Your technique really did have a long way to improve if you moved from
pedalling with your arms to pedalling with your legs.

I'm thinking of getting a chain ring tattoo / tuff-sticker on my right calf, to disguise the occasional "gumby" grease ones. Good reason to keep the drive chain clean and clear! I saw a guy (racing cat 1 at Murrarrie some time ago)with such a tatt on his left calf (outside). I never really understood it😕 😕

Doesn't anyone else stand up against their bike, brushing their
chainring?

I cleaned mine against today (Shiny!), so I suspect it will rain
tonight despite the forecast.

Not a grease tatt - it was a real, green ink tatt - professional looking job, not a long bay / pentridge cell block E deal.

I couldn't tell if it was campy or shimano. Probably lower-end shimano given the user had it on the wrong leg and everything < gruppo wars flamesuit on>.
