Blowout at high speed

A blowout on the back wheel shouldn't be a problem. A blowout on the front wheel could be depending on when it happens. Flying down a hill and lining up for a tight corner look out.
I have been riding road bikes for years and have never had a blowout. To reduce the risk of a blowout make sure the front tyre is not in any way worn. If you buy a new tyre make sure it goes on the front wheel. When installing a new tyre make sure that no part of the tube is caught between the rim and the tyre before you inflate it.

Dunno about common, I had a front blow out on me at about 50 odd.
Juddered to a halt, no real drama. Might be different if cornering
though.

There is this hill where we have hit over 85 k and I had a flash, I wonder what happens if I blow the front tyre now? Lycra is thin, and skin wears pretty quickly. 🙂

Had a blowout last year on the MBTC Mad Ride. Entirely my fault due to not paying enough attention to some basic wheelset maintainance, descending with LX Deore brakes & shagged out rims does not make for a happy mix. Painful lesson: look after your bike to avoid component failures. 🙄

The only tyre blow-out I've had is when touring with a heavy load on
20km downhill after my front brakes had become disabled and had to use
the back constantly. Tube overheated and sounded like a gunshot when it
went. The tyre was destroyed in the process.

I don't think under normal circumstances it's likely. If touring then
time isn't so important so you need to check the pressure of your tyres
from time to time on long steep decents.

I'd be tempted to say that it's unlikely to dump you unless you panic and
brake with the wheel that has the flat. If you did that the tyre *might*
conceivably come off the rim and wrap itself around the stays/forks.

So don't do that.

85 ks an hour, geezes thats fast.
Iv'e hit around 65 and I [censored] myself, felt like I was doing 200 k's an hour.

I managed to hit a small pothole and blow my front tire doing about 65km/hr whilst doing a weekend tour down towards Jambaroo pass in the Southern Highlands. I didn't break anything but a sure lost a lot of skin.
We have had the tandem up to 96km/hr but I look for road defects very carefully

I have had the front tire blow out doing about 40km/hr along Pittwater Rd at Collaroy. We hit some broken glass that not only punched a hole through the tire but also penetrated the inside wall of the rim. As we were travelling in a straight line, all we got was a scare.

I had one high speed blow-out I'm not likely to forget in a
hurry. It was the back tyre of a tandem which `rolled off' the rim
on a steep hill not far from Melbourne at about 40 k/mh. The wheel
locked and I found myself sliding helplessly on the steel rim. I
got the two seater off the bitumen and into the gravel shoulder
where it did a barrel roll, ie, wheels uppermost and me and my
back seat rider underneath.
We both survived, but at some cost, as I fractured my spine in the
crash (not seriously) and was grounded for a while.
Obviously, the circumstances of this crash were exceptional and I
never repeated the experience, though I did crash a tandem again
in 2002.
I have had both single bikes and tandems up to 85 k/mh, but this
seems about as fast as my bikes want to go for some reason. I was
up to 75 k/mh in Victoria's western district with a full touring
load last week.

I've got to agree with euan. Any spinal damage is serious. I am really glad that you are OK. My sister suffered a fractured spine 24yrs ago and it stil gives her problems.
When we were in Canbera a couple of years ago, we met a wonderfully positive guy who was a top ranked MTB rider ( his wife was in the Aus 2000 Olympics MTB team) who had a low speed accident while riding in the NT and became a quadraplegic. Count your blessings !!!!!

On the subject of speed though, a couple we ride with occaisionally (Brian & Sue) managed to hit 110 kms/hr riding down the hill from Mulveny, QLD.

I had a front blow-out during a crit once. I was on the front of the pack, chasing down a break, doing maybe 40km/h. The tyre went as I went into a sharp (90 degree) corner. I hit the deck like a sack of potatoes. The guy immediately on my wheel managed somehow to miss both me and my bike. The guy behind him wasn't so lucky - got tangled up in my bike and went over the bars, resulting in some impressive concussion and a lot of facial cuts. The next rider hit me square in the back. Her frame snapped clean in two, and she suffered grazes.

I ended up with road-rash on pretty much every limb, a really sore back where I'd been hit, destroyed jersey and knicks, and a pretty badly beat-up bike, costing lots to fix.

Part of the repair was a set of wheels specifically for race-days, with new tyres, that get checked religiously for glass the night before a race. That hurt real bad, and I never want to do it again.

I was hitting one every couple of seconds - a couple ended up in my
eye, one ended up in my shirt, and was sitting on my shoulder, making
its presence known.

At home, a couple made it inside, and the cats sure liked the new
toys.

Glad we don't have the locust plague yet...

Didn't notice any worse than normal yesterday in Adelaide. A few weeks ago I
rode through a small swarm of bees.

Tucked up, closed mouth tight, squinted eyes and said a quick prayer to the
patron saint of not getting stung (went something like "Holy Crmmmpff!"😉.
Considered myself lucky that I didn't get stung and that none went down my
unzipped jersey but was scarey and painful anyhow and one was particularly
attached to my glove, either trying to make babies or commit suicide with it
until I shook it off.
