IMHO the stadium would be a big mistake. Not a stadium, but the stadium
they want to put up for the Jets. They are putting a stadium in a very
densely populated area of NYC. They are basically going to screw up traffic
any time there is an event there. They should put the stadium in a different
part of the city which can handle the increased traffic. What they should be
doing with the space is just extend the convention center, which is part
of the stadium plan. That would be money well spent because it would bring
more revenue to the city with basically no extra traffic.

Amen, Alex. As a resident of Chelsea, the problems would be huge if the
stadium was built there. The Jets only want Manhattan. Queens is out of
the question.

It's football, only half their games are at home, and only once a season
will it be at home on a Monday night. A few other events, like Jimmy
Buffet concerts, might bring a few more traffic hang-ups.

But really, for the people that matter, the people that live and work in
NY City, they are savvy enough to know that using a car for anything
other than getting out of the city is useless and vain. They'll still
complain like hell though about having a stadium on their island. Even
though the proposal is cool as all hell.

If you're stupid enough to take a car down the west side highway..you should
sit in traffic..

In a place like Manhattan where there already is so much traffic, that is
just a bigger headache to deal with. The other thing to consider is that
the new stadium is very close to the Lincoln tunnel, so on days when there
are big events, the backups will make their way across the river to NJ.
The Jets can stay in NJ. As for the concernts, MSG can handle that. The
only positive part of the whole stadium project is the Javits convention
center extension. But you don't need to build a stadium to do that. You
can spend a lot less money to do the extension and reap most of the financial
benefits.

Actually, if they build the stadium getting out of Manhattan is going to get
worse since it will be next to one of the exit points in Manhattan. Also,
I think you meant to say owning a car in Manhattan is useless, not the city.
In other parts of the city you have to have a car to get around efficiently.

More traffic and more pollution is not cool at all. Just because the Jets
want to be on Manhattan is not a good enough reason to do something as
stupid as building a stadium on a very crowded island. Put a stadium on
Randall's Island. That is considered part of Manhattan.

I feel compelled to weigh in on this, since I actually live in the
metro area and work in Manhattan. First, traffic isn't always screwed
up. You'd be amazed that it flows pretty well for 20 out of 24 hours
of the day. Not bad considering the region has upwards of 12 million
residents. Also, the transportation system is quite good here. It's
good enough so that even beer guzzling football fans can Park-and-ride
from NJ, CT, and LI and enjoy a new stadium. Since the seventies, the
public has been dissuaded from driving in Manhattan unless absolutely
necessary.

While I'm against it, a stadium on the West side might spur the
furthering of the 7 and L subway lines. By the way, there are large
parts of the west side that are not as densely populated as you would
think, yet.

The other alternative would be to re-commit to the Meadowlands site.
The traffic there gets absolutely insane, because people think it's
driveable. An option there would be to extend the new Hudson County
Light rail (see http://www.njtransit.com/images/hb_final_1031.gif ) or
promote more bus use.

IMHO, on ever issue in the news, people from the rest of the country
are so anti-NYC. It's a pretty awesome place if you think about it.
It functions amazingly well. And, it's the heart of a BLUE STATE!

PS: The Big Dig was a necessary evil, unless Boston could convince
people to DRIVE LESS! A city growing that fast cannot handle
one-per-car commuting.
