Nathan was cycling to college yesterday. Couple with dogs on leashes walking in the middle of the road. Nathan calls out "Cyclist behind you" to which the people moved. As Nathan went by, he called out a thank you. To which the bloke says, "Okay mate, but don't you think you should have a bell on the bike in the light of the current controversy."
Lord I hate the XXXXing media. Here's a cyclist being entirely polite and giving audible warning, and he even says a thank you and he still gets whinged at for not using a bell.
I have instructed Nathan that next time he should say "ding-a-ling"....

Hmm. It makes no sense anyway.
Since the speaker acknowledges the existence of a controversy, why does he assume that Nathan should act as if the controversy had been resolved in a particular way?

When will Nathan be along to tell us what words were really exchanged ;-)

I guess Nathan must have been going very, very slowly. . . .

I've actually shouted "Ding, Ding" as I've approached from behind (not in a Leslie Philips way you understand - w.r.t. both the shout and the approach).
I've pointed out that it's my lightweight bell when subsequently stared at quizzically.
Steve
p.s. Given the current controversy I'm selling these bells at a reduced rate of £49.99 - check my site for details.

I somehow can't picture Nathan doing a Leslie Philips impersonation ;-)
Wasn't his catchphrase "ding-dong", not "ding-a-ling" ?
Apologies for this pointless pedantry. But it's important to get the trivia right. Otherwise who will believe us when we discuss the true meaning of life, eg bicycle sprockets, bicycle chains and gear ratios :-) -- Dennis Davis, BUCS, University of Bath, Bath, BA2 7AY, UK [email hidden]

I called out "Beep beep" as I approached a couple from behind (oo-er) on a quiet lane the other morning. They looked at me like I was some kind of idiot. Perhaps they thought I believed I was a car. Or something.
