The amount of fasting depends on which tests are going to be done. Your
doctor's office is probably right.

Um your doctor says stop at 12. I would do as he says and not as a bunch of
nuts on the internet say. No offense to the nuts This is a simple blood
test. I think your doctor can handle that, considering he is just reading
what is recommended from the people who perfected the test.

Well, yeah, but I DO do this for a living so get patient calls all the
time to the lab where I work for this stuff, so I am _qualified_ to
answer the question. ;-)

8 hours minimum, 12 hours is better so rather than setting a clock time,
he needs to know the number of hours to fast.... We don't know what time
the blood test is scheduled for.

The fact that his doctor told him to fast at all means he'll probably at
least be getting a glucose test and/or serum lipid levels (Cholesterol,
Triglycerides, HDL and LDL).

If his Trig. levels are exceptionally high, it's recommended to repeat
the test after a 14 hour fast.

So, it's his call.

Not everyone knows tho' that you do need to avoid coffee and tea. Water
only.

Now, if this person has hypoglycemia and cannot go that long without
eating (or a diabetic for that matter), then he needs to work with his
doctor on that...

All of these folks who taut the "do what your doctors says" don't seem to
read, either. the OP said the 'doctors office' said not to eat after
midnight. How many times do they make mistakes because really busy staff
fail to read the charts fully to see which tests are ordered? My doctors'
office is always a madhouse and they make simple mistakes all the friggin
time.

For this reason, I make it a habit for standard blood work to fast at least
12 hours. Also, I strive to get my appointments as close to 8 am as
possible, and before if I can. Most can do a simple 12 hour fast if you
start after dinner.

Well... I was told to tell them that by our chief tech
when I first started working in the field.
I really doubt they are going to drink too much.

There is a slight chance that they could dilute out the blood
chemistries, but I've never managed to do that to my own and I consume
about 1 gallon of water per day. ;-)

It's coffee that can really screw up Glucose testing!
