  1. I finally got my cholesterol checked after 8 months of low carbing. I
waited till now because I was still losing and Doc said the results would
    reflect that.

Boy was he right! my triglyceride reading was only 22. I was wondering how
many others had readings like mine?

My total Chol 194 normal 140-200
    HDL 64 normal 35-85
    tri 22 normal 35-160
    ldl 138.1 <130 desirable 130-159 borderline risk

this test only after a few hours fasting since I was in on sick call. He was
very pleased with me keeping the 55 pounds off, and was fully supportive of
the low carb style. "I completely reversed my physical condition" drug free.
Days like this keep you going!

keep the sugar out of my life and pass me the salad

  3. Congratulations, the numbers are great. Do you know what they were
    before LC for comparison?

    Nice Job !!

  5. the tri was high, but I didn't get the numbers- enough that he was going to
medicate me if I didn't go on a "diet"

I really couldn't believe that my triglyc were so low. I couldn't find
anything bad about a low # though. LDL was a little high- I think increasing
    activity will help that.

Here's the thing; it's so low that I wonder if the whole test was
accurate at all? The only test that is usually at all accurate without
a 12-14 hour fast is HDL, the others are worthless if you've only fasted
a few hours. For TGLs to be so low non-fasting is really, really
    extraordinary.

I'd try again after a fast, but if that's really your TGL, WOW!

You're usually recommended to do the test after a 10+ hour fast
because otherwise it can give falsely high results. A very low result
is not usually the result of insufficient fasting.

Congratulations, Diane. It looks like LC REALLY agrees with you.

The recommendation in the US for optimal results is 12-14 hours.

You're right about the low TGL not being a result of non-fasting. What
I meant was that I think it's so low that the whole test may be lab
error. It's hard to imagine TGL so low just a few hours after eating,
    though anything is possible.

    Susan

  9. I had my test done after a 12.5 hour fast and my trigs were quite a bit
below the recommended range too. I found several web sites that said low
trigs can be caused by malnutrition, malabsorption (not absorbing the
nutrients you are getting), diet too low in fat (doesn't apply to most LC
plans), and high thyroid levels. I'm borderline hyperthyroid, so the last
point might apply to me. Low trigs have also been linked to increased
severity of strokes but they don't say what the LDL or HDL readings were
    for the research subjects.
My doctor was extremely pleased with my results so I'm not concerned about
    it for now.

  10. Unless I'm completely missing something, these numbers don't add up.
Your HDL is 64 and your LDL is 138.1 which adds up to 202.1 right
there. The third component to total cholesterol is your VLDL which is
your triglycerides divided by five. 22 divided by 5 is 4.4 so your
total cholesterol would be 206.5. Certainly not a bad number but not
the total cholesterol number they've given you. I'd have the blood work
redone after fasting and see what numbers you get.

  11. I think I'm going to get stuck with the bill even though I have Blue Cross
insurance- for $200 I definitely wanted to see the report- but will wait
till next year for retest since I feel great. I had a bowl of LC cereal at
4am before work ( active job) and the appointment was at 2 pm.

The thought of fasting is worse that an exam to me haha! It would be
interesting still to hear from veteran LC'ers on how there scores are. I
also supplement with essential oils and the Atkins brand vitamins- so it may
    not just be diet.

The sick call complaint? I have developed a ringing in my ears (hearing is
great) and wanted to be assured that I wasn't doing anything harmful. I'd
rather live with a little ring in my ears than take any drugs to silence it
so case closed. he said it's possible that I'm hearing things differently
since losing the weight- though I've never read about anything like that.

Hi, you're describing tinnitus, which I have, too, due to chronic CNS
infection. There are no pills to silence it, unless it responds to
antibiotics. Some folks with severe, intrusive tinnitus take Xanax to
quiet it down a bit, or use sound masking with white noise.

One thing about low carbing that sometimes fires up my tinnitus (which
is usually pretty silent since treating with abx) is high salicylate
meals. If you're sensitive to salicylates, which are present in high
levels in a lot of LC veggies and fruits, it may be firing up your T.

There are a lot of possible causes, but this one is noticable in my case.

    LDL = total cholesterol - HDL - (triglycerides/5) Since Diane's numbers
don't fit into this formula, I'm thinking her lab may be one of those
equipped to do the direct measurement of LDL.

  15. Yes, it was me. I did a google search for low trigs and LC and it seems to
be common and unrelated to thyroid problems.
I am borderline hyperthyroid, though, and have had tinnitus too for several
years but didn't know there was any correlation. Thankfully, it's mild and
I can mostly ignore it. Thanks for the info, Susan.

    Susan said:

Another thing to consider is what an OP posted, was it Bev Ann? She
said that thyroid dysregulation, among other things could lead to unusal
    results such as yours.

Thyroid abnormalities have also been linked to tinnitus.
