    Good grief!
That LAST thing I need is an _increase_ in cortisol levels! :-P

What about some of the cortisol blockers being sold by some of the
bodybuilding supplement companies? I've never seriously investigated
    those.

    Which one's???

Since I've never investigated any of them, I don't have any brand names
memorized at the moment. I just peruse articles and ads for supplements
when I read "Muscular Development" It's the only BB rag I subscribe to.

I'm VERY cautious in investing in supplements! They are expensive and
can be a waste of money without proper research.

Right now, all I take is a good multi (Solgar brand VM-750), a double
dose of "Now" brand multiminerals, Nature's way trace minerals, extra
vitamin E, C, A&D, and a lot of extra Twinlabs Magnesium since I have
trouble retaining it, (Doc says I have a genetic renal tubule defect
which causes me to lose magnesium at an abnormal rate), DHEA at 100 mg.
per day, Melatonin at night as a sleep aid, and prescriptions are
Thyroid Armour (or Thyrolar when we can get it!), Metformin, 2,000 mg.
per day, Adderall XR once per day (and I don't always take it on my days
off as I'm not really overly fond of Amphetamines) and that's pretty
    much it.

    Probably plenty IMHO? <G>

If you know of some brands or supplements, I'd appreciate some advice.
I'll also peruse your website again and see if you have any info. there?

I can get the bottles of liquid Red Ginseng extract at the local
    Oriental market.

I have a friend who is researching genetics of many things, ginseng in
particular. He's growing some behind his lab on the beautiful coast of
Sea of Japan. Many years ago we've built that genetics lab building
    together from scratch.

Here is a recent photo where he is digging up a 16 y.o. plant:
    http://home.nc.rr.com/netsink/Panax1.jpg

    Pretty plants! Profitable too.
I subscribe to "Ag Ventures" magazine which is a rag for niche farming.
Making a profit on small lots of land. They had a good article on
growing Ginseng, but my property is really not suitable for it.

Right now, I'm looking into putting in a pond and growing real Wasabi
instead! The real stuff is more expensive than the common paste that is
    available at most markets.

    However!

"Red Ginseng" (Panax) is not the same as Eleutheroccus (Siberian
ginseng) which is a different genus (Panax). They are of the same
family Araliaceae. Eleutheroccus is a bush and "ginseng" (Panax) in
the photos is a plant that grows for many years.

I suspected that after I did a bit more reading.

    Quoted message said:

There are at least four common Araliaceae species with somewhat
similar (but not the same) "adaptogenic" properties growing in Russian
    Far East and China -

    Eleutherococcus, Acanthopanax (these are bushes)
    Panax (regular ginseng)
Aralia mandshurica (this is a tall and very thorny tree)

Saponins in all these species (as well as in American ginseng) have
different chemical structure. Aralia's extract (called "Saparal"😉 used
to be very popular among USSR students studying for exams.

    DZ

Ginseng is supposed to be a magic elixer for a lot of things.
Seems to be more of a stimulant than anything else.

Green tea extract used to be my old standby.

    Oh really?!?!?

I've never experimented with Ginseng before...

I specified the Siberian form of ginseng because that is the version
    that you should be taking.

Avoid Siberian ginseng if you have high blood pressure.

"For stress: Take 100 to 200 mg three times a day. Special "adrenal
gland" formulas now on the market commonly contain Siberian ginseng in
combination with licorice, pantothenic acid, and other stress-fighting
    ingredients."

"-Dried root: The recommended dose is 500 to 3,000 milligrams dried
root daily (tea, or in capsules).
-Tincture: (herb and alcohol; or herb, alcohol, and water), one
    teaspoon three times per day.
-Fluid extract (1:1): 1/2 to 1 tsp. Two to three times per day.
Extract (33% alcohol extract): 40 to 120 drops one to three times per
    day.
-Solid extracts, made from dried, powdered root are also available.
Look for products that contain at least 1% eleutheroside F, and take
100 to 200 mg three times per day. "

Thanks, but before I jump into it, I need to do more research first...
I'm a bit leery if studies showed it to raise Cortisol.

Not that I'd totally believe the findings of a single study only. I know
    better than that.

I prefer to do a lot of reading and cross referencing before trying a
new supplement, and not just because of the expense. ;-)

I believe that the person who owns the problem is one who must spend
their own time doing there own reserach.

I simply repeated the position of the Wellness community on Siberian
Ginseng (Russian Ginseng) ability to reduce Cortisol induced stress.

Having no background in the sciences I figured out how to research
medline some 7 years ago. I know how to search for exact phrases,
authors, and for journals in Medline. A person with a science
background should have no problem. Ha, ... Hah, Ha!

I was researching a problem yesterday on the ability of deep breathing/
exhalation/ forced breathing to lower heart rates. I had better luck
finding a relevant abstract searching Google than with Medline (since
the Science people behind Medline don't have a clue as how to set up a
good search engine). But, from that 1st abstract I turned up a half
dozen more good abstracts on Medline.

You will still have to make your own conclusion, something that science
people absolutely refuse to do. Doing so will make you a part of the
    Quacky Wellness Community. 🙂

Just thought that you might want to know. 🙂

You consider doing some research of possible interactions of all the

or combinations might be part of your underlying weightloss plateu and
not have that much to do with your stress change at work. "Everything
is the same" usually isnt. Your food schedule is probably off just as
your sleep patterns are. People underestimate the importance of sleep,
its not just the hours but the type of sleep you get.
For an example of side effects of Adderall, it states, "Ampthetamines
can cause a significant elevation in plasma corticosteroid levels".
    http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic3/adderallxr_ad.htm
"In physiology, corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that
are produced in the adrenal cortex. Corticosteroids are involved in a
wide range of physiologic systems such as stress response, immune
response and regulation of inflammation, carbohydrate metabolism,
protein catabolism, blood electrolyte levels, and behavior".
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corticosteroid
Might want to rethink using the Adderall.
You say you take 'lots' of TwinLabs Magnesium because your absorbtion
of it is suspect. Wouldnt it be better to get this mostly from
magnesium rich foods? This link lists magnesium interactions plus food
    sources:
    http://home.caregroup.org/clinical/altmed/interactions/Nutrients/Magnesium.htm
Also, too much magnesium can cause diarrea which can lead to
malabsorbtion of the other vitamins/minerals you are taking. Money
    'wasted' away you might say.
These socalled cortisol 'blocker' products have nothing extraordinary
in them. A few appetite suppressants, some vitamin/minerals, etc and
are just capitalizing on the 'stress makes you fat' bandwagon to make a
    quick buck. http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/wrh/cort.html
As far as cortisol and stress levels, just take extra VitaminC, which
in higher doses helps to shut down cortisol levels.
