Interesting site. I've just completed the Cumbria Way and still find walking along watercourses a bit of a chore but well worth it for the solitude of Langstrath. West Highland Way in three weeks then the C2C on a bike in July. Walked Offa's Dyke Path, C2C, Hadrians Wall and its the Pennine Way next year so if anyone can give me blister cure I would more than appreciate it. [email hidden]. All tips appreciated.
Blisters form from repetitive rubbing. Other have posted all sorts of suggestions for how to reduce the amount of repetitive rubbing the feet get. You can in addition considerably reduce the sensitivty of the skin to rubbing and consequent blister formation by taking extra vit E. I find it a useful enough increment in skin robustness against blistering that I make a point of topping up on my vit E consumption a few days in advance of doing a lot of walking or lot of gardening (hand blisters).
I say "you can". All I know is that it works for me and I've seen others report the same effect, including people who bothered to standardise an experimental blistering procedure. It's possible that there are some for whom it doesn't work who haven't bothered to comment :-)

Thanks for the replies to my query ref blisters which i posted through the walking englishman. i`ve used all the methods available including well fitting zamberlan boots & merrill trail shoes, the main area is always the outside of both heal areas. I`ll give the old compeed as a preventative measure & gaffer tape over the top of these then let you know how i`ve faired. Next problem is my dislike of walking along watercourses so any veiws on loch lomond?
In addition to the other suggestions (protection, socks, condition of feet, nutrition) there's another factor: wash your socks in something 'benign' and rinse then properly. I use either Ecover or BioD liquid, especially on my cycling shorts. Also don't overload the washing machine. Most detergents are bad for your skin. Oh, yes, the same principle applies to washing your feet.
-- Peter. If you can do it today, you didn't put off enough yesterday.
Agree the Bridgedales are very good. I wear them for spring and summer use. I've recently started using Thorlo "Hiking" socks for summer which seem very nice (they DO fit me though).
I've used Thor-Los in the past

though they tend to be a bit long for my feet in the right size (but not necessarily *your* feet).
I tend to use the heavier Thorlo "Mountaineering" socks in winter.
Both the Bridgedales and Thorlos have loads of wear in them.
Up until recently I used to swear by only 1 pair of socks but I've taken to using Bridgedale Coolmax inners as well. I think they do actually help to keep my feet a bit cooler and drier in hot weather and it means you don't need to wash your outer socks every day (handy for multi-day walks), just wash through the inners and they dry pretty quickly.
I guess that makes a lot of us "beginners" every now and then, in that case... I don't /often/ get them, but I do get them.

Me too - never leave home without the Compeeds!!. Wet socks, new boots/insoles, walking too far => blisters. Sometimes even blisters =under= 'leather grade' heel callus which is a real pain since you can't then pop them easily.

Cobblers.
Judith
Now now Judith, cobblers are the last people who ought to get blisters! Well, if they are GOOD cobblers, anyway. (p.s. you are over a week late replying!).

Depends on your point of view. 200 miles in 13 days. Strathcarron to Stonehaven.
Yeah, Ok, your absence for 10 days is excusable then (but the extra 3 days goofing off will have to come out of your paid vacation). 8>. Hope you had a good time, and didn't get too many blisters.

Old joke :-
I left a pair of boots for repair in our local cobblers but then forgot about them till three years later when I found the ticket. I went back one Monday to pick them up and he told me they would be ready on Friday !...:-)
