we never went that close to see in the hole,the dog did but all she was
bothered about was getting a bit of their sandwich.

I would want to be buried in a degradable coffin & an oak tree planted over
me..my nutrients giving it a good start hopefully.

I have said to my wife Clare that when I go to the 'big hill in the sky' I
want my ashes scattered on top of Scafell Pike. Just fancy resting on top
of England. She wasn't too keen on the idea ..... I wonder why!

I said I would do the same for her, but she thinks I would put her under a
rock so the many visitors would sit on her and do naughty things out of
their bottoms. As if I would ............................

Not sure if this is the correct date, but 24 May 1998, I descended Blease
Fell and an Elderly gentleman had died of a Heart Attack (I was told). His
grandson, wife and I presume daughter-in-law were sitting next to the body,
his face covered by a backpack.

Ten minutes further down, the MRT were racing up the mountain with all their
equipment.

I remember this day, because I was fantastic climb up Sharp Edge, third time
up and there was not a cloud in the sky, and then a lazily walk back down to
Thelkeld.

Horrible to say, but it was a lovely place to die - sunny, warn and great
views. Much better then a nursing home or hospital room.

According to Keswick Mountain Rescue's records, you got the date right. They
were called out at 11:50 and their record shows the incident as "A man (71
yrs), an experienced walker, collapsed and died whilst walking with his
family."

Very sad. But you're right, there are far worse ways to end your days.

My best friend and walking mate Scotty has already organised his. His ashes
have to be scattered from the trig point on Penyghent which is his favourite
hill. Now living in Somerset he misses the Dales so much and although not
rushing for the departure from Penyghent he does hope it is a windy day so
his aura can be scattered 'far and wide!'

Thanks for that Neil, much appriciated as I tried to find out info at the
time. The scene lived in my memory for quite some time and many times
since.
