black sail hut brings back memories.
I completed my Gold Duke of Edinburghs Award around Ennerdale and
surrounding area some 16 years ago...........

That sounds like the warden I saw there the summer before last. He was
stocking all sorts of interesting foods in the little shop, and
apparently cooked a very mean curry for the residents once a week. He
seemed like a great bloke 🙂

I've never stayed there overnight, but I've often planned to return
and do so. What a great place 🙂

I`ve stayed at Ennerdale before and have always quite liked the idea
of staying at Blacksail. I`ve heard the curry story from a friend who
stayed their last year. Apparently one night a week, he cooks a huge
variety of different curries (8-9?). Almost beats my local Indian
restaurant.

I hear both Ennerdale and Blacksail now have limited electricity. I
find this a shame as most people who choose such an isolated hostel
would appreciate the gas lights/open fire. Get down to Dolgoch or
Tyncornel YHA`s in mid Wales while you can!

Never stayed there, but passed it many times on walks from Scarth Gap.

Last passed the Hut on the first May Bank Holiday this year on the way to
Pillar. Got talking to a couple on Pillar who were staying at Black Sail
and talked about his curries. They said Curry Night was Thursday and he did
8 different curries. Highly recommended by them.

Keep saying Clare and I must stay a couple of nights. Great location to
relax after a hard days walking.

I remember staying there years ago and remember the warden at the time to be
a real character too. He was quite scruffy as I remember but cooked
fantastic bread. The best I've ever tasted. Sadly I believe he went off to
Africa soon after where he died of some rare disease. Anybody remember him?

I am a regular visitor to Black Sail and was last there in June. The guy
in combat trousers is the assistant warden (Keith) whose cooking is
second only to the regular Warden, Pete.

If you have never stayed there it is a must.

The electricity is very limited, from wind generator, and hardly used.
Heating and hot water from stove in lounge and gas lights still the
order of the day.

I have been there in some appalling weather but to sit outside on a
glorious sunny evening looking up to Gable and Pillar is quite an
experience.
