I'd popped home for lunch, and because of family visitors and plans for
this evening, I'd suggested walking back to work. I should have!

My minor crash in December left me with a stiff neck for 6 weeks. And
I've just noticed the previously-indestructible rear wheel is now
slightly out, probably from the same incident.

One of those "I'm glad I wasn't wearing a helmet" occasions, because the
weight of my head strained my neck ligaments as I fell over sideways.
Another 3/4lb of martlehat would have increased the strain. My head
also avoided hitting the tarmac, by the way - here's a little experiment
you might like to try:

Stand against a wall with your right (or left) foot and shoulder
touching it. Now try to touch the wall with your head. Very difficult,
and in fact nearly impossible for me, as I have the flexibility of a
house brick. Now try it wearing a helmet. Much easier. Now, if you
fall off a bike, which situation is more likely to lead to a blow on the
head - helmet or no helmet? It's an issue of simple geometry.

However, throw kerbstones and other objects into the equation, or do an
endo, and the helmet looks more useful. I wonder what percentage of
cycling head injuries involve going over the bars?

Weird - i had something similar last night, where i ran into the back of a
car at low speed and fell off. In my case, the wet road was maybe less of
a factor than the very poor brakes on my current bike, the fact that said
brakes were wet, and the fact that i was carrying a friend's bag slung
over one shoulder as well as my own rucksack. While slightly drunk. In
other words, entirely my own idiot fault.

.... the immediate reaction from people around me. Cars stopped, a
pedestrian ran over to see how i was, and the driver of the car i hit
stopped just down the road, then walked back to see how i was. The
pedestrian and the driver were both genuinely concerned - which, given
that i was the party at fault, was rather humbling. I'm rather ashamed of
myself, really, and i was treated better than i deserved.

So there you go. I will try not to be such a duffer in future.

Ah, i got a cut above my eye and a grazed cheek. One of my housemates
reckons the cut looks really manly, though, so it's not all bad!
