Wow and tomorrow is this Vernon's birthday and I know I am
getting a Camelback and a Tom Simpson book...

very parallel world-ish but the similarity ends with the
Shiela Chandra CD that's also in the offing...

    Happy birthday for tomorrow!

It was a good one. I fancied riding the York Selby cycle
route so I rode out to Selby to do it. Clocked up 45 miles
making a grand total of 110 miles for the weekend. I covered
the 25 miles to Selby at a respectable
15.2 mph a faster pace than the day before though I suspect
that the road surface contributed to the faster pace.

My Sheila Chandra CD is brilliant, my Camelback Mule is
still unused though that will change the week after next
when I get some cycling in in the North Yorkshire moors as a
precursor to doing the Yorkshire Dales Cycle Route the week
after that.. The Tom Simpson book is on hold.

Glad you had a good day. York - Selby is on my list of
trails to try out. Whats the surface like ?

I did some more of the Trans Pennine Trail this week, I
have now completed Leeds - Heath (SW of Wakefield). I
have written a quick report which I'll put on my website
once I do it again to get some pictures - which might be
    a long time !

Very good apart from a bit at the Selby end which is on the
river/canal embankment and is grassy earth could be a
quagmire in foul weather. The rest of the trail is tarmac or
that finely crushed stone that leaves a firm hard surface
when compacted. It's possible to maintain near road speeds
on the route and there's a lovely large scale sculpture on
one of the railway bridges. I'll be taking a colleague out
to do the route after easter. There's no ruts at all and the
route passess through the race course at York and follows
the river for a mile or so ending up at Lendal bridge.
There's also a scaled Solar system on the route which give's
one a sense of scale of our planets and sun.

I remember that's a nice ride. It also has its own website:

I wasn't overly impressed to be honest. I don't want to be
too critical as I think these trails are intended to
encourage folk to cycle rather than to encourage keen riders
off the roads. The surfaces are OK to poor, there is at
least one bridge where the bike has to be carried down some
steel steps which in cleated shoes is tricky ! While the
canal, its boats and locks are interesting the surrounding
environment in this part isn't, mostly industrial wasteland
! It was deserted in places and prime place for ambushes
alternatively if I'd crashed, how long before I'd have been
found ? I know most of the above applies to most cycle
trails, but the Spen Valley Greenway is much better.
