  1. Was having a bit of think about the benefits of these this morning and was wondering whether a high denier nylon stocking would have the same effect (for a much lower price)?

they're usually not compressive enough, however "running bare"
cotton-lycra tights do the trick just fine...

What advantage are they presumed to have?

    Compression supposedly aids recovery.

The ads certainly smack of a similar approach. And they still harp on
about lactic acid build-up, ignoring the research done on this a couple
    of years ago.

    Them's the ones. Very expensive.

I find a cold bath and some cheap compression tights though make my
recovery happen faster, after an ultramarathon. From my highly
scientific study of two races, one of which I immediately post race sat
in cold water and then later wore tights and long socks, and one of
    which I did not.

Any sports shop - it's a standard women's sporting brand that actually
uses good quality materials, that last.
