Biking in Hungary

I happen to have a Budapest bike map in front of me. It's all
written in Hungarian, which limits its comprehensibility, but it may
be issued by somebody called Frigoria www.alarmix.org/frigoria

I also have a bike map of all Hungary, showing a few major bike
routes. It looks as if the bike route along the Danube continues all
through Hungary, including though Budapest - on street through
Budapest. This map isn't written in Hungarian, it's in Dutch, which
I find equally incomprehensible. That one seems to be put out by the
Hungarian Tourist Office. I get the impression from the map that
cycling is forbidden on many main roads, not just on motorways.

In my experience, when biking you should always eat BEFORE you're
Hungary. If you get Hungary, it's already too late. :-3)

Wow, thank you very much for the information. I will try to contact
that Hungarian company about their maps, and perhaps they have some in
English. In my research I did find one route that travels from Prague,
through Vienna, to Budapest, although that may be a bit too much for a
casual day ride. Thanks again.

As a side question now, a friend of mine was wondering about a route
that would start in New York City, and end somewhere in California
(preferably a large city such as San Diego or Los Angeles). Does
anyone know of some maps for such a route (for free or pay)?

For touring maps of the USA, the best source is the Adventure Cycling
Association, http://www.adventurecycling.org

They have an entire network of cross-country routes worked out and shown
on very detailed maps, including icons for campgrounds, motels,
groceries, etc etc. We've found the maps to be very good - although the
route profiles (showing the hills) were often inaccurate.

BTW, their "Cyclists' Yellow Pages," a special annual edition of their
monthly magazine, has sources listed state by state, which includes
quite a few state-published bike maps.

And hey, they have international sources too! Here you go:
