My favourite part was the completely gormless dog they brought along:

The dog rushed up, barked twice, then retreated down the trail "as fast
as his little legs could move him", Mr Wolling said.

No steak for Fido that night.

    There's a joke about bears:

When travelling in the woods, you should have small bells on your person
or bike to warn bears of your approach.

Keep an eye out for signs of bears, especially bear spoor. You can tell
it because you will see small bells embedded in the turds.

Bear back at the den: "you should have seen the one that got away from
    me today..."

Good story. A friend of mine was riding his road bike through
Glacier Park, Montana, doing about 25 mph. A grizzly darted out of
the woods right in front of him, and he struck the bear at full
speed. He broke several ribs and punctured his lung. The bear
continued on its way, apparently unhurt.

    The other bear joke is:
    Carry a .22 pistol.
It won't do anything against the bear, but when it attacks, shoot your
    partner in the leg.
    Run

Apparently the Australian article was just an edited version of the one

Heard a story about a guy who always carried a .38 with him in bear country.
An old timer asked him why.

"So I can shoot the bear, if I have to."

"With a .38? All that will do is [censored] him off!"

  14. Is there anything that is effective against bears should one attack?

Yes. You should climb a tree. This will enable you to tell if you're
being chased by a black bear or a grizzly bear:

If it's a black bear, it will climb up the tree after you. If it's a
grizzly bear, it will stay on the ground and knock the tree down.

A 44 magnum and plenty of ammo. Practice loading real fast.

  19. What about a grenade? Although I suppose that might take a few seconds longer than you actually have.

The key is to evaluate what kind of bear. If it is a Grizzly climb a
tree. If it is a black bear fight back. Or something like that. Other
sites suggest that you must evaluate whether the bear's behavior is
aggressive, defensive or predatory in order to decide how to respond.
Google bear safety for more than you want to know.
