in grease inside a wooden crate, with assembly instructions in 17 languages

I bookmarked them a long time ago. I don;t know the source, but google
this newsgroup for bikesdirect and see if anything turns up from the
archives.

FWIW, I have 3 friends who ride Motobecanes that they got from
Bikesdirect. They came partially assembled, so you'll have to do a bit
of wrenching (don't ask me for more specifics, I'm parroting) But all
three of them have been quite happy. 2 of them got Sprinttours (Al
frame, carbon stays, ultegra), but I don't remember which one the third
got. Reasonably nice bikes, but pretty cheap components everywhere
except the gruppo, i.e. headset, saddle, stem, wheels, etc.

They sell Motobecanes. A couple of years ago at Sea Otter I was there when
the guy opened one of those boxes and assembled the bike. It was a DuraAce
group model but otherwise the same as one of those from bikesdirect. After
he put it together (no pedals) he hung it on a scale there in his both and
AS DELIVERED it was 14.5 lbs for a 56 cm.

Now I'm a big guy and don't think that those wheels would last long under
me, but the rest of the bike looked strong as anyone else's.

That sounds like a pretty good bike to me.

Motobecane was a cool brand 20 years ago. No reason why they should be
avoided now that they are essentially a Taiwan brand.
