Stop smoking first. Just stop doing it.

A good bike, depending on condition. Get some slick tyres for on-road
    riding.

I'd take the wheels from 177, fit them to 186, and then transfer the
    remaining components from 175.

They're 2 separate things. You need to get back on a bike, and you need
to stop smoking. Cycling won't do that for you by itself.

Your list of bikes all came across like this without full links to the
auctions. You seem to be casting your net fairly wide.

Looks like a chicken and egg problem to me ,as well.

Looks like the best of the bunch. Also remember to check fit.

anything will do as long as its big enough.
just need to feel the buzz from turning the pedals and being propelled along
on this magnificent invention by Kirkpatrick McMillan.

Agreed. Mine has lasted for more than 4 years of London commuting with very
    little maintenance.

Goes OK with slick tyres. Survives being left out in the rain for six months
    in Greenwich...
