How much can they cut down their spares stock and still be a bike
shop?

I have to say my local superstore has just added a Bike Hut extra floor
and it is very low on actual parts, almost all new bikes and gizmos,
but then it does have to vie with floor space for blue lights and 3"
exhaust pipes for the local chavoisie.

They don't even have a decent range of car spares. Try getting gear oil
in an economically large container, for instance. That's cos a third of
the store is taken up with stereos and the Ripspeed chav-up-yer-motor
department.

My local store devotes slightly less space to cycle parts than to

In mine they keep rearranging things so that the BikeHut has abot 50% fewer
shelves than it did three years ago. I only go in there to buy patches,

Not the farmers, though. I used greatly to enjoy Ry Cooder's 'The Taxes
on the Farmer' which is another ditty about the poor hard done by
tillers of the soil - undoubtedly true of the US (and the UK) in the
1920s, but wonderfully ironic in the 1990s.

Most of the superstores are adding extra mezzanine floors internally, at
present. Summat to do with new laws coning in soon about planning
permission to increase floorspace, whereas right now they don't apply.

Mezzanine floors are often quite low in terms of headroom.
