  1. Further to the gas price discussion...

Yesterday I took a little spin around Hewlett Inlet on Long Island (Long
Beach, Atlantic Beach, The Five Towns, Oceanside, Island Park, Long
Beach, 15 miles) and pulled into the Hess station for a carton of
cigarettes. (gas was $3.39 unleaded regular self serve, no lines at the
pumps. And why do gas stations continue to have the cheapest prices for
cigarettes now that they don't really have to go out of their way to
    attract customers?)

Anyway, a nice shiny new BMW X5 SUV pulled up and walked over to the
cage and dumped a bag of change into security drawer. Really. Like
change you take out of your pants at night and stick in a jar or
something. He had $4.35. That got him less than a gallon and a hlaf,
maybe 10 miles if he turns of the a/c. I must have been looking at him
like he was nuts, and he says, sure is hot out here today. It;s crazy.
(The actual temperature was, in fact, 93 F.) But I had just been riding
through the breeze wearing a wicking jersey, and hadn't noticed the
temperature at all, so I looked at him like he was even crazier.

Are we gaining the upper hand?

Because the cigarettes at gas stations are always stale.

You interrupted a bike ride to buy a carton of cigarettes? Does no one else
find this counterproductive? I worked with a guy years ago, who smoked, and
started cycling and I told him "pretty soon you will quit one or the other",
but you won't continue to both smoke and ride, not counting casual flat
riding. He gave up the bike.

That was the end of the ride, I didn't interrupt anything!

My filthy habits aside, part of the charm of bike riding is getting a
good close look as to what's on sale or available, and then getting it.
Stuff a car is too fast for and feet are too slow for.

Oh yeah. I find that when I go shopping on my bike I buy less junk
because I don't want to carry it all with me. So not only do I save
money on gas, but I save money by buying less stuff and making fewer
extraneous trips around town in the car. Plus, there's the obvious
health benefit of aerobic exercise (though the way I ride is not very
exhausting), and the satisfaction of getting somewhere under my own power.

Yeah, me too. Fifty pounds or five bags is my limit, so no extraneous junk
for me. Maybe that's why megastores want lots of cars to come in and are
    unfriendly to bikes and peds.

Not quite the bike you are thinking of.

I happened to catch a bit of Cops last night. I don't normally watch it but
wall-to-wall Katrina devastation was getting depressing. I needed a dose of
America's Stupidest Criminals to lighten the mood. I was immediately
rewarded with a frumpy suburbanoid 40-something guy who had picked up hooker
and some marijuana. When stopped by the cops it turned out the bud was
genuine but the hooker was a guy in drag.

    Mood lifted.

But that wasn't the almost on-topic part. The next scene was of a patrol
who pull over a guy on a motorcycle. the guy jackrabbits and the chase is
on. When he did take off it looked like his helmet was not on his head but
strapped to the rear of the bike. anyways the guy does get ahead of the cop
car, runs a red and hits an SUV who was pulling out. Man! I couldn't believe
the amount of damage the bike had done. The bike guy wasn't breathing when
the cops got there but the paramedics did get him breathing again.

The cops looking at the guys helmet comment on how it took the damage...

But-but-but I could have sworn the guy wasn't wearing the helmet when he
    took off.

    Helmet feuders: discuss.

I remember hearing about a ATV rider who ran off the path into a
water-filled ditch and drowned. The local radio station carefully
stated that he had not been wearing a helmet. He probably would still
be alive if he had been 🙂

Maybe the foam in the helmet would have helped him to float?

Damned Department of Homeland Security asleep at the wheel again!

(So much for a ride helping :-P )

I do, but I already took my lumps pointing out paradoxes on the coffee
    thread.
