bike trails- Williamsburg

Take your bikes. The Colonial Parkway: Yorktown-Williamsburg-Jamestown
is quite scenic and crosses the peninsula from the York to the James
Rivers. At Yorktown you can take a ferry across the James and continue
to Surrey, Va. There's nice riding there but most especially, a great
local place to eat: The Surrey House. All of the hotels have ferry
schedules.

You will find that the "restored" area is good for bicycling as well
(cars not allowed). There's a lot to see outdoors, formal and informal
gardens, interesting buildings, and so forth. With a bike you can see
the side streets, explore the old campus section of William and Mary.

I had an unexpected 1 1/2 day layover in Williamsburg this past April,
because of a crack in my bike frame, that required replacing the frame. The
shop (Bike Beat) gave me a loaner bike for the interim. The best bike
riding is on the parkway. It's about 14 miles, IIRC, from Williamsburg to
Yorktown, and about 9, from Willaimsburg to Jamestown. The route is wooded
with gentle hills and quite a bit of riverside riding, on the York en route
to Yorktown and on the James en route to Jamestown......Duh.

There are a lot of roadside signs along the way to mark historical events
and places. Neither Yorktown nor Jamestown is impressive in its own right,
insofar as old buildings go. There are few ruins.

Williamsburg itself is the real place for history, with the restored
colonial areas and workers affecting 18th century life. The histroical area
is bike-able but there are a lot of pedestrians sharing the pathways.

All things considered, I could hardly have picked a better place to have a
mechanical breakdown

There are bike trails. As I recall, the ones in Williamsburg itself
were liberally paved with recycled hay. (Another good argument for
fenders!)

There are bike trails. As I recall, the ones in Williamsburg itself
