  1. After years of running and mt bike riding, I recently bought a shiny new Bianchi which I'm enjoying
very much. Over 100 miles a week now, and that's not shabby for an old fart like me -- 61 last
birthday. Just did 27 miles in 1:35 here in Newport Beach, CA, around the upper bay.

A riding buddy suggests I deflate the tires after each ride, then re-inflate before the ride up to
120 pounds. He says the tires will last much longer. I know the ride is faster with higher pressure,
but I feel the bumps, too.

Right now they're at about 80-90 pounds and filled with Slime. Had at least two thorns stick in the
front tire in the last two months.

    What do you all suggest?

That's baloney about deflating the tires to make them last longer-it's illogical. But, inner tubes
will lose a small amount of air overnight anyway-you should top them off before every ride. Start
with your front tire at 100psi and rear at 120. Make 5psi adjustments until the comfort, liveliness,
and cornering of the tires are best for you. If thorns are a persistent problem, put Mr. Tuffy
    strips in your tires.

    Should post this in rec.bicycles.tech

Never did that so don't know but cheap tires seem to last a lot longer than the ones in the 35 - 40
    dollar range.

Save the expensive tires for competition and use the cheap ones for training.

I usually inflate to max pressure, forget the bumps, what's your BMI, we'll want to know so that we
may suggest a training routine to get you into the best shape of your life. <g>

Dr. Kurgan may have to do a complete physical on you first.

Nothing, except that it kind of smacks of:

"Netiquette Nazi is in control and he/she does not tolerate backtalk. The guidelines for every
discussion forum are clearly posted and he/she demands obedience. If any of you sniveling dogs break

Even better, cross-post it to all cycling newsgroups. That way, it will

on the subject, and then we can see Jobst try to set them straight. That will be far more
entertaining than anything you'll get in any 1 ng.

  12. I see that Doc Krugan is a real Nazi if one posts to his dislike. I bet he'd beat his own mother if
    she asked for advice here.

Remind me to unsubscribe from this group.

Hang in there Dave, we can get you whipped into shape in no time at all.

Don't worry about miles, up your riding time to 2 1/2 - 3 hours on three to four days of the week.

Somehow I don't think Herr Gringioni political views would qualify him a Nazi, although there may be
    other posters who would qualify.

If you take anything said in this ng seriously then its probably better for your blood pressure if
you do unsubscribe. On the other hand it can be quite amusing if you treat most of what said as a
joke. As a bonus you might even learn something every now and then when people like Andy Coggan, and
even Gringioni in one of his more serious moments, posts.

THE FACT YOU POSTED to a bike racing newsgroup means you want your answer from a racing POV.

Inflate your tires to max pressure (usually 120 lbs for 23 mm tires) before every ride, unless it's
wet, then back off 20 lbs. At max pressure you are less susceptable to flats and the ride feels
    faster and more enjoyable.

    Ditch the super Fredly Slime.

Do not deflat your tires UNLESS you're not gonna ride your bike for 3 mor more days or if you are
going to put your bike in a hot trunk and the increased air temperatures might blow a maxed out
    tube/tire.

Ditch the Slime. What are you thinking?

Why use air at all? Just ride them flat or fill them entirely with Slime. Then they can't go flat,
and you won't have to inflate them and deflate them every time you want to ride.

But, it you're just have to be like the pros and want to keep on using air, consider using slightly
less pressure. I recommend 119.4 psi for the dry, or 118.9 if it's raining. As for making your tires
last, consider doing what all the pro teams do - remove them from the wheels after every ride and
store them in the freezer until your next ride.
