hi all. i getting a new bike this week (felt f80... first road bike) and I'm going to be keeping it i n my apartment at school. anyway 4 guys in a dorm apartment and not a hole lot of room for the bike, and no putting holes in the walls... (well i work for res life but still). so I'm trying to figure out what kind of stand might work well in this situation. i was thinking of something that would let me get it up in the air so i could put it over the couch or something so it wont take up to much room and be out of harms way...... any ideas?
ooh the apartment is a 4 bedroom with kitchen and living room, i thought the bike would make a good art peace when not in use😄
There's racks that kind of lean against the wall (no nails) that will get your bike up in the air. I'm not sure how useable the space under it might be. Nashbar has them.

My wife and I scored when we bought a gravity bike stand. They also look great with you bikes at rest.
I am using one that leans on the wall and hangs 2 bikes (one of top of the other). Its great. No nails requires and has a gel stopper that doesnt scratch or mark the wall. The bottom bike hangs only 5cms from the ground the the top one is still easily reachable. I bought it for only $100 AUD. Great for apartments.

coloradocyclist.comproductdisplay2 v2.cfmOpen ↗ I used to use one, when I was in a temporary housing situation, that was polished wood construction and had felt-covered about 5-inch square pads that you just screwed out tight against the ceiling. I liked it because I could put a single bike up high with virtually no footprint taking up floorspace.
(When I was in a college dorm, I also built my own by just fastening a pair oftwo by fours to each side of a low double-depth bookshelf with hooks on a crossmember 2x4 with coated hooks. Worked well aside from the occaisional dirt that would fall off on top of whatever was sitting on top of the shelves. But hey, it was college back in the late 70's and early 80's, and housekeeping was not a priority..what can I say😄 )
I made a couple pairs of wooden shelf bracket-like things and screwed them into the wall where I wished to hang one bike and then the other. Effectively the same exact thing as the wooden lean against the wall style stands, without the vertical beams and the floor support if you are hanging the bike(s) in a spot where you dont want that. Its minimalistic and pretty much all you see is the bike hanging there. A little felt and a pad on top of the wood to protect the frame of course. Was a cheap and easy thing to do so long as you dont mind doing a little spackling and painting when you take them down.

Just a thought. What about a repair stand? It will hold the bike very securely and it will allow you to work on the bike as well (if you chose to). I use this model:
thanks guys! i really like the idea of using a stand that i could use to work on my bike as well as store it, however I'm thinking I'm going to make a rack with a 2x4 and a folding rack i saw at the hardware store. I'm pretty handy at making things and design and build furniture as a hobby. anyway I'm going to build it to wedge between the floor and roof so i don't have to put holes in the wall (but i will if i need to) and it should work well, and i can set the rack to whatever height i want.
