Yep, traction. Like on a football shoe. Nobody NEEDS a shoe like that, but plenty think they do since the pros where them. Keep the rubber side down.

It's just a reflection of my experience of riding mountain bikes for years. I am not, have never been, will never be, a pro level rider though. I am not sure how much "advantage" there is from a shoe like the one in the picture. I know they are not as comfortable as some other shoes I have tried. I have used everything from plain (almost skate inspired looking) shimano spd shoes (flat sole) to spd shoes with almost a hiking sole and I am convinced there is not a real need for a completey rigid soled cleated shoe for 99.9% of the population on bikes. Diehard roadies and professionals aside, there are a vast array of affordable shoes that perform very well out there that make off bike traversing even easier than those race shoes.

You want them, go buy them. They won't make you ride faster, jump higher, balance any better, or your wind last any longer than a much cheaper and potentially more comfortable all-around recreational shoe. Simply put: don't worry about the image, just ride and have fun.

IIRC John G uses (used?) 'em, especially in winter when ice-biking New Hampshire.

Climbing hills while on foot and scratching up your mother's hardwood floors. There's nothing unique
about these shoes, most mountain bike shoes look like that.

Yep, cuz I've tried lots of different shoes over the years, including a few of those race shoes. If you ever get a chance to ride with a pro or two pay attention to what they where when their sponsors are not paying them to wear something (like when they are just riding for fun, etc) most won't even wear the free/discounted hard shoes they wear when they race.

That example you use is not really good at all, if you paid attention. A better example would be: why pay more for a car than you have to or why buy an suv/4x4 (please don't say snow) when all you are going to do is go to the mall, or why buy a $1000 dive watch when you never leave the kiddy pool? Sure you CAN! It just doesn't make sense. There are soooo many other things that make a difference you can spend your money on. Just get on your bikes and ride. Ride what you want, don't get offended when someone doesn't agree with you, it's not personal (unless you are a yankee fan!);-)

Exactly. If you've got to portage your bike across a muddy, debris-filled gully those toe spike come
in handy - they'll bite right in so you can scramble up the other side. On the other hand, the toe
spikes on my Nikes were an out and out menace at Slickrock. Should have taken them off.
