  1. Hi, I cycled with about 60km/h down a hill. Then my whole bike , especially the handlebar and front wheel, started shaking, I was lucky and coul stay on bike. I had this once before with another bike but not with this one (since 3 years). So, is there a problem with my frame (not stable anymore)? Or ist it justdue to the wind (there was wind and I do have wide rims)? Whats the best thing to do in such a situation? Jonas

  2. Your stem bolt is probably not tight enough.

  3. If you never had this problem before then it's not the frame unless you had a recent crash, otherwise it's something mechanical and I agree to look at the stem and headset; but first make sure your front skewer is properly tightened, the skewer lever should just start to feel tension when it is 90 degrees out from the locked position, then retest the bike, if the problem is still there then the headset is probably loose. You can check most headsets simply while at a stop apply the front brake and rock the bike back and forth, if you feel something knocking or it feels loose then the headset is out of adjustment.

It could also be the front hub bearing is out of adjustment or worn out, but I doubt this, but if the above stuff doesn't fix it then you need to look here.

Here is a video on how to adjust the headset, this may be a Cane Creek adjustment but it works for all others; see:

  4. Have you gone that fast on this bike before, perhaps it is a case of the speed wobbles?

  5. It could be the speed or a mechanical problem. If it happens again, I'd check your bike. Wind sometimes is a factor, but make sure it's not a problem with the bike.

  6. How wide (side profile) are your rims?

You found the resonant frequency for your bike...not a good thing. No bike should shake uncontrollably at any speed.

Check spoke tension, headset preload, handlebar and stem mounting point fastener torque, wheel true and balance, Wheel hubs for loose bearings, tires for broken carcass and lastly measure for frame alignment.

Lastly, are you riding a large frame size...say, 59 cm or greater?

  7. Loose headset, loose wheel bearing, out-of-round wheel, grossly out-of-balance wheel--it could be any of these, plus those already mentioned.
