Karrimor do a rack pack that is also a rucksack but it's not
my idea of cheap at over 30 quid on Wiggle. It is on my
birthday list however, as it would suit me down to the
ground for carrying stuff about on combined
peddling/strolling family trips.

I use one of those trunk things (12L capacity), Karrimor.
Not cheap, it was about £30. It's quite neat but the fixing
is a pain (buckle/velcro) and no water resistance. It comes
with a shoulder strap, and if looks are important it does
resemble a hat box. If I was buying again I'd go for a
small rucksack like the Karrimor mentioned, but check out
the fixings.

Waterproof, pump, puncture repair kit. Odd bits and
piecs I'd buy in town, but nothing huge. Perhaps a
change of clothes.

I used to have one of those.

Verdict: a waste of time and money. Too small for the kind
of load I'd like to carry in both modes, and far too much
trouble to convert. I ended up keeping it as my mini-
backpack - even when cycling - until some burglar got it
(along with things I valued much more:-( ).

Hmm, if it's like the one I've got be prepared to be
frustrated with it and then give up using it......

Mine is over 10 years old, so may well be different in this
aspect, but it works fine as a small rucksack, and it's ok
one on the bike (though can't easily be used with panniers).
But it is let down by the attachment system, it had nylon
straps/buckles to fix it to the rack - this is the opposite
of quick and easy to remove. Eventually I just stopped it
was to much of a faff.

I went out hunting today - biketrax had a couple of briefcase-
y things with shoulder straps which turn into panniers.

(one at £35 and one at £60)

I couldn't find the Karrimor rack-pack, but Velo Ecosse said
they could order it in within 2 days.

I'd still like to see one in the flesh before I buy, mind
you.

One assistant said the main difficlty is that folk like
squishy ruc-sac backs for when they're carrying them, and
the pannier back needs to be quite rigid to ensure it stays
in place on the bike.

What I don't understand is why the makers feel that the pannier-
back needs to be the same surface as the rucsac-back.

A pannier back, with rack-mount fittings. (flat and
rigid) B or C or D rucsac back, with back-straps (soft
and squishy)
