Your own insurance is not needed if the injury/damage is definitely
caused by the the car driver.
I was knocked off my bike a few weeks ago, the bike was totally wrecked
and I suffered with a cricked back for several weeks. The driver was
forced to admit that it was her fault due in part to the nature of the
crash [1] and the fact that witnesses actually stopped and gave
statements to the police. I pursued the claim from her insurance company
by myself and I won a pay out large enough to replace the damaged bike
with a new one with enough left over to make my back feel a bit better.
In different circumstances where the blame is not so clear, I think the
insurance company would have fought much harder. I would not have been
able to achieve any sort of satisfactory result without professional help.

[1] The car ran into the back of my bike while I was waiting to move
onto a roundabout. I doubt that a counter claim that I reversed into her
car would have been very successful.
