  1. Just got a Garmin GPS unit for the bike. Give the speed and distance very good and sets a "breadcrumb" track you can follow back to the start. Have not used on a trail yet, but seems to be very accurate riding around town. Has anyone else had experience with this units.

  2. I've used a garmin gecko, a great gadget which from a practical standpoint let me refine/extend alternate commute routes, and beyond that allowed me to become a lot more adventurous on long rides, just pedal around randomly and try and find decent roads/hills etc rather than just doing laps of places I knew.
I haven't got a decent mount for it.

  3. I've got the geko too. It's very nifty. I use it on both my mtn and road bike. I've double checked it against my cyclocomputer and it's VERY similar (speed/distance) wise. In fact I like it better sometimes as it displays in 0.1's vs. 0.5's. It churns through batteries too fast to use every day. I like to use it when climbing to give me elevation and vertical speed.

You can get the bike mount here.....

Yes, had a Garmin Etrex for several years now. It doesn't have a map display, but it's great to get you home if you're out exploring backroads and need a little help finding the route back.

Works great with the Delorme Topo software to develop and explore a new routes; you can build the route on your computer, then set up waypoints for the key turns using the Garmin USB cable. Kindof cool to know exactly how far it is to a turn you've never been to, or which way to turn at an unmarked fork in the road.

can you load maps into the geko? I have the garmin forerunner, and can't load maps, I agree with short battery life, and also the speed and distance seem to be good. won't replace the the cycometer as doesn't give average, highest and actual ride time. Lots of fun to play with. It has a wrist strap and to put on the bike I use a piece of pipe insulation to go around the handlebar. thanks for posting the web page from garmin Melo🙂

r.e. speed, the geko has time moving, moving average, total time / total dist.
I think it's got max speed too.

Maps, no - just waypoints. Personally I've just been entering a few waypoints manually ahead of going somewhere.. does the job.
