  1. I have started to commute to work, its 10 miles there and 10 miles back and it feels all of those
miles whilst I do it ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I am having fun!

I am not going to do it every day, at least to start off, I don't want my knees exploding, which
they feel as if they may.

In order to keep my self motivated I am going to slowly upgrade my kit, Today I got myself some nice
looking gloves, Once I have done another 5 days I will get a cyclocomputer (Astrale 8 I think, for
    the Cadence)

I think though that my bike could do with a few new shiny bits. She has an xtr front hub, but all
the rest is a bit crummy. I am not sure quite HOW crummy though so I would welcome your input.

I have uploaded a few snaps (I am sorry for the focus, I am not at one with my digi camera yet ๐Ÿ˜‰

My shifters are RSX sti, and the rear has 7 cog wheels. Front hub is XTR Rear is Exage Chainset
seems to be shimano "A" I am not sure what current range that is equivalent to. Frame is Holdsworth,
but I dont know of what type or year.

I would like what ever thoughts you have, especially towards which bits to upgrade, and what is
possible to change relatively easily, ie where modern parts will work, and where I will have to
search out second hand parts. Sources of 2nd hand bits and bobs would interest me too.

    Thank you

You want to be careful. Are you sure you're not riding with too low a cadence and straining
    your knees?

Yahoo says that the album is currently empty.

10 miles is pretty much at the max for what I like to do as a commute, so that's a pretty good
    place to start.

A dangerous path. I find I can justify all my bike expenditure on two grounds:

    1. Motivation (e.g. to inspire me to go through another winter, I'll get some nice winter
    cycling boots).

    2. Economy (e.g. if I didn't cycle to work, we'd need two cars and that would cost ยฃยฃยฃยฃยฃยฃs, so I
will get that Deore bit when I next service the bike).

I a bit exaggerated for effect, I try to be sensible around my knees. I suspect that I do drop my
cadence too much, which is why I will get a cadence meter on my cycloComputer.

I think yahoo has something against me, the e-mail I use here just stopped working one day, and I
cannot get them to change the password on
    it :/ now I cannot log into no:2 ๐Ÿ™

However I have uploaded them to an other account

    f2.pg.photos.yahoo.comhydraao

I see now that I had not set the other group to "public" also if I don't pay up you only get 2
    levels of zoom.

I guess I am asking how I know what new parts will fit on an old frame.

    Yes I know ๐Ÿ™‚

I am being strong though, only able to count commutes done, rather than "if I had this I
    will do MORE"

The real danger is that my ride takes me past a really good LBS!

Mine just takes me past H*lf*rds. So not so much of a problem!

    Fragg,

Don't know about the parts, but underneath that scruffy exterior there might well lurk an early
1970s Holdsworth Professional. This was a class bike in its day and is still a cracker by today's
531 standards. Holdsworth's team colour was orange and the Pro came with a sloping fork crown and
very few braze-ons at that time-just like your's. I think there was another, lesser (but still very
good) Holdsworth model with a sloping fork crown, though, so it's difficult to be sure. All the
transfers are available should you want to have the frame restored.

    Cheers, Bruce

Aye, and its a wonderful ride. It is a real shame its in such a state, I am sure M Steel would spray
it up for ยฃ70 or so. a bit more if the "official" colour is hard to get, and I would want it back in
    its bright orange glory.

I am slightly afraid they would strip it down and find some knock or kink that will be expensive or
impossible to repair. Also then it will look like a new bike, so more attractive to thieves. I would
also have to think again about my flouro bag rack ๐Ÿ™‚

Really I need to get it a set of circa '70's Campag record kit and stick it on the wall as an art
piece, then go get me a GT Streetmachine.

Perhaps if i dont eat for the next few months......

I'd say the bike looks fine for comuting, but of course there is allways places to improve.

I'd be surprised if you run into any problems getting stuff to fit on the bike, as long as you
make sure not to buy mountainbike stuff by mistake or try to combine a x-speed shifter with a
    y-speed Casette.

Since you use the bike for comuting you should consider putting fenders on it, that way you
could ride even if it rains without getting dirty from the spray of the wheels. (Unless it
    really pours that is)

The whole transmission is somewhat low grade which means it's rather heavy, and most likely you have
a lot more gears than you need. On the other hand upgrading the transmission will cost money but
it's a good place to save some weight, plus the teeth in the front does look pretty worn (not 100%
sure as it's hard to make out on the picture) so you will have to do some soon anyway.

You could also consider doing something about the paint on the bike, but it may be easier to keep
the look out for a decent used frame one can get lucky. Fx. I bought a very nice classic brand name
(Colnago) steel frame complete with fork (a Eddy Mercx), headset and bottom bracket for the
equivalent of ยฃ50 so there are bargains to be had.

Unfortunately I can't recommend a 2nd Hand place to shop except perhaphs eBay, since I guess a forum
here in Denmark would be useless to you.

    Good luck with the comuting

    Bruno
