Everything was going okay for the first tenth of a mile. Then I
bruised my love handles with my knees when I reached down for the
drops. I decided cycling was too dangerous; now I just read this

regular gas in the Denver area is $1.70 - $1.90 per US gallon (~3.8 liters),
and in my corner of Colorado it's $1.80 -$2.00. Would any British readers
like to give us an update on the price of gas in their corner of the world?

I was happy and amazed to see that many fuel stations in CZ also sell
biodiesel. It's comical to me that in the US, only a few researchers and
activists have even *experimented* with using biodiesel. In CZ, it's
already a commodity.

There are certainly a lot of Americans that are incapable of riding a
bike because of weight, but I don't believe it's anywhere NEAR 20%.
Is there any evidence to support that statistic?

I have seen some REALLY fat people on bikes...

If you change "physically unable" to "fat, and too lazy", the percentages
will likely quadruple.

From what I've seen, it seems like more than that can't even walk, or have a
hard time of it. That said, cycling is the easiest way for most people to burn
a lot of calories, without stressing their body in other ways.

For a while, I've thought that the US should change how it funds the
military. Rather than using income tax, 60-70% of the military budget
should come from a tax on petroleum, not just a gas tax. Not owning a
car, I still benefit from trucks being able to deliver food at low
cost, at cheap plastic products, etc.

If people don't like the price of gas, they cut back and the military
is forced to reduce operations. They like having lots of gas, they pay
and the military is able to keep the oil coming in. A self-regulating
system in ways.

Guy gets his cheap. In my bit of the UK, it's a sniff under 80p per litre which
works out considerably more than in the USA. I must admit, I have a wry smile
when I hear of complaints about the price of fuel on t'other side of the pond
;-)

take more than 200lb riders. That'd disqualify at least 20% of Americans.

A few years back I spent some time bicycling around England, Wales, and a
little bit of Ireland. Occasionally when I passed a gas station I would try
to convert the posted prices from pence/liter to US$/gallon, doing the math
in my head. At first I thought I had made some gross blunder in the
computation, but it finally dawned on me that people really were paying that
much money for gasoline. Made me damn glad to be on a bicycle, instead of
driving!

I've seen some incredibly heavy people on bikes - some who I would
expect to have trouble walking (at least very far). It's nearly the
perfect workout for them since they're not damaging their already
overloaded joints. There is one particular very, very heavy woman I
passed on my regular ride - she would ride a heavy upright bike on the
sidewalk at a very, very slow pace. As the months went by, she lost
probably 50 pounds (22kg) and got faster. I haven't seen her for a
while (my schedule changed), but I wouldn't be surprised to see her
riding faster (and thinner).
