Bicycles are not transportation ...

Can't really blame them, personally. After all they're in the buisness
of selling books, not bikes or advocating them as transportation. And
seeing that is the mentality of most of the country, so is where most
would look it makes sense.

Not saying it's right, just commercially logical.

If you just read "Transportation" as "Motorized Vehicles", and
"Sports" as "Non-fuel-powered activities", it beginss to make sense.
Horse riding began as transportation, after all, but equestrian
pursuits are now classified as sports.

Things change; if they go the way that some would like, the Cycling
section may require its own shelves at some point.

in the Engineering section, 620. (629.227). Just behind Aircraft
(629.133) and Automobiles (629.222)

"Bicycle touring" and "bicycle racing" are classifed under Sports,
Games and Entertainment, 790. (796.6)

Commerce, Communication and Transportation is 380.

Barnes and Noble puts books on their shelves where they think people will
look for them. Sometimes the choice is arbitrary or difficult, but it is
never intended to be a ruling or defining choice. After all, would you
expect them to create a section for each subject in every possible context?
There would be as many bicycle sections in the stores as there are bicycle
newsgroups.

RECreation.

You are paying too much attention to too little. My guess is that they
classify presidential memoirs as "non-fiction", and how much sense does that
make?

Did you find walking/hiking books in that section as well? B&N is simply
placing the books in a category where people interested in cycling... *and*
wanting to spend money on books on the subject, are likely to go. People
using bikes as basic transportation are a relatively small, and yet very
practical part of the marketplace. They generally don't need books and
eye-candy to make use of a bike for general transportation.

Now, if there was a separate section for books on commuting, I'd certainly
hope to find some cycling-relevant books there! But that, again, probably
isn't a category that would support much in the way of book sales.

I also find a much nicer group of people browsing the Sports section. The
Transportation section hereabouts in the bookstores I frequent, which
includes B&N and Borders, have mostly NASCAR, Harley, and train-spotting
type books under Transportation.

Besides, if you order online to actually get what you need and want,
usually at a lower price, categories like that are so much brick-and-mortar
atavisms.
