Bicycle Storage in Rome

One solution is to ask the B&B where you've stayed, ... especially if
you reserve another night there after your 3 or 4 days outside of Rome.

Many train stations have a secure "left luggage" area. I used one while
in Venice. I left my bike (intact) and camping gear there for a few days
(for a significant fee). I didn't look for one in Rome, but would bet
they have the same. They charge by the piece, so one hard shell case
shouldn't be too expensive.

but I didn't get around to staying there. I think I remember that they
picked him up at the airport.

I would try a bicycle shop. Buy something there (repair, check, food,
isodrink, whatever), have a nice chat (a beautiful shop he has) and
kindly ask ehim if you may have your bike rest at his place for some
days. Offer him some money and he probably will refuse to take some.

However, it may be impractical inside Rome; a lot easier, instead, to
find a friendly shop in a small town.
In case you can arrange to leave your bike around here, where I live,
I would have a few winning suggestions.
