Yes, it might be an interesting question, but that's not the thrust of my paper. And, in what I
asked, the cyclist would receive a discount on their motor vehicle registration so there is
something in return.

Are you a hypocrite?

The entire point of urban cycling is to negate the need for using, and thereby owning a car.. Why
the hell would we want a discount on something we don't own or want to buy?

Dont top post, it means your replies dont make any sense. I mean how can you answer a question
before it is asked?

Anyway back to the thrust of your paper;

Talk aboust misleading assumptions, your questions are so lead and so crazed, wtf would I do with a
discount on MV reg?

Bah.

3. I am not going to debate the pro's and con's with everyone, I was just interested in your

How about explaining the logic behind your own suggestion? I think plenty of readers here are
stunned at your suggestion that cyclists would want cheaper car registration and the least you could
do is to elaborate..

Greetings to all readers.

I am currently compiling a paper regarding the registration of bicycles for use on our roads. Now
at the risk of being called a troll, and evoking emotional and abusive replies, I would like to
ask you all a few questions to gauge your reactions to the following questions.

I would appreciate single yes/no answers as opposed to emotive scripts or long discussions. Thank
you for your participation in advance.

NOTES
1. The term bicycle here is a generic one and includes all types of bicycles and recumbents, and
2. This registration would not include legitimate on or off road cycle races, but would be payable
if you intended to train on the road.

Q1. Do you think that motorists would accept you being on the road more, if you were required to
register your bicycle in order to ride on the public road? Yes/No

Q2. If you were required to register your bicycle, would you accept the requirement more if the
cost of it meant that you received a discount on the cost of registering your, or a nominated
motor vehicle? Yes/No

Q3. If you were required to register your bicycle, would you accept a cost of say $10 per single,
$15 per couple, $25 per family (3 or more bikes for persons aged over 12 years of age) Yes/No

Q4. If you were required to register your bicycle would you want the registration to include Third
Party Insurance? Yes/No

Q5. If you were required to register your bicycle do you think that the registration would assist
to reduce the incidence of theft or assist in the recovery of those bicycles? Yes/No

Q6. If you were required to register your bicycle would you consider a method of being paid per
documented ride as a rebate on motor vehicle registration, or as a payment? Yes/No

Q7. If you were required to register your bicycle would you prefer a personalised plate? Yes/No

Q8. What country do you live in?

Again, thank you for your participation.

On Note 1: I'll assume you wrote, "bicycles and recumbents" out of ignorance, not as troll bait.
Both of my recumbents *are* bicycles.

On Note 2: I won't even comment on the idiocy of that loophole. (Oops, that was a comment!)

Q1. NO. All subsequent questions are now superfluous.

I think you can assume no cyclist wants to see mandatory bicycle registration. There would be no
benefit to the cyclist. And why would registration make us more accepted on the road? After all,
bicycles were on the roads before cars were invented. The problem is with the cars on *our* roads.

I can speak from experience that any laws mandating the registration of bicycles will be HUGELY
unpopular, even to the point of generating recalls against politicians who try to bring them about.

Really? I commute by bike (when I do) because I enjoy riding my bike. Try not to make the usual
bike-activist mistake of assuming that we all share your primary motivation for riding.

10. Quoted message said:

Q1. Do you think that motorists would accept you being on the road more, if you were required to
register your bicycle in order to ride on the public road? Yes/No

No. Most motorists do accept cyclists, in my experience. The views of the very small but intensely
annoying and dangerous morons who don't accept us won't be changed by anything short of a firing
squad, which might be satisfying but is somewhat excessive. In most cases.

Quoted message said:

Q2. If you were required to register your bicycle, would you accept the requirement more if the
cost of it meant that you received a discount on the cost of registering your, or a nominated
motor vehicle? Yes/No

Great idea - if there's a per-bike discount, all of which can be applied to the same car, I can
probably end up with the government paying me for my car registration. I realise those who are not
sad bike obsessives with a fleet of bikes may feel differently.

Seriously, though: no - what's this intended to achieve?

Q3. If you were required to register your bicycle, would you accept a cost of say $10 per single,
$15 per couple, $25 per family (3 or more bikes for persons aged over 12 years of age) Yes/No

No, because it'd be a complete waste of money. Those fees would be well under the cost of processing
registration forms, entering information into databases and feeding the necessary infrastructure.
Bureacracy is expensive.

Quoted message said:

Q4. If you were required to register your bicycle would you want the registration to include Third
Party Insurance? Yes/No

Might as well, 'No' answers above notwithstanding.

Quoted message said:

Q5. If you were required to register your bicycle do you think that the registration would assist
to reduce the incidence of theft or assist in the recovery of those bicycles? Yes/No

No. Stolen bicycles are notoriously difficult to recover because they are so easily broken up and
the parts interchanged.

Quoted message said:

Q6. If you were required to register your bicycle would you consider a method of being paid per
documented ride as a rebate on motor vehicle registration, or as a payment? Yes/No

This question makes no sense. Read it again, then try and ask the question you meant to ask,
whatever it was.

Quoted message said:

Q7. If you were required to register your bicycle would you prefer a personalised plate? Yes/No

No.

Assume a no answer to everything.

But a more interesting question would be, what could cyclists expect in return for paying for

In the scenario being described here, nothing, as the fees suggested would be less than the cost of
collection.

Such non-cyclist accepting motorists should be forcibly converted to cyclists by having their motor
vehicles impounded and drivers' licenses revoked (at least on a temporary basic) and being required
to use HPV's as transportation.

If ".au" is a country, this brings up an interesting question. Since URL's from the United States of
America (USA) do not have a country of origin identifier (.usa?) at the end, does this mean that the
USA is not a country, or does it mean that the USA intends to rule the rest of the world in an
imperial manner?

Tom Sherman - Various HPV's Quad Cities USA (Illinois side)

13. Well my quick answer would be no to all--I believe we should encourage bike commuting as an
alternative to driving a motor vehicle, not saddle it with more legal requirements and taxes/fees.
Speaking of taxes, in the USA there are tax breaks for buying a qualified electric vehicle or a
clean-fuel vehicle. But there are certain requirements like having 4-wheels and a motor. What's up
with that? Why not the same tax break for those of us who chose to commute in an even more energy
efficient and clean-fuel burning means: on a bent (or a DF or any kind of HPV)?

This leads to another problem in long threads. Posts get _big_ when people just slap their answer on

Dear friend, Idon't want to take your Legeslative (fire) but in the US even though most Drivers can
be asses behind the steering wheel, especially towards cyclists, more legeslation and regulation for
HPV's seems like a thing of nonsense we are already restricted on who we are and what we ride.it is
almost like a proposal to license joggers!!!! think about it for a bit, auto drivers are hated by
Truckers , motorcyclist cannot stand auto drivers, and they all have tagged registered vehicles!!!
what makes you think that anyone will respect the cyclist if they have plates? I ran a 2mile steep
run down hill 30mph i was doing 45mph down this hill, and i had drivers blaze past me at60+!!! This
is what you call the "DOG" factor. Like a dog,the driver sees some poor schmuck on his pedal pusher
burning no gas but buzzing better than his steel BOMB and the idiot stomps the gas and goes for the

Good Morning, For my two penneth, the idea of registering bicycles is barmy. Are you going to get
seven year old primary school kids to pay registration ? Users of scooters, rollerblades and
tricycles ? I am not going to be abusive, but the idea of paying for the road should be confined to
those who occupy most of it and also cause damage to it and the environment, specifically cars and
trucks. A bit of tinplate isn't going to alter the fact that a small number of car drivers are
[censored] and will harrass you simply because you aren't surrounded by a tonne of metal like
everyone else. I have been touring for 25 years and knew about road rage before the term was
invented, I have been the target of various missiles, had doors opened on me, and I have been shot
at. If you want to lose an election, go right ahead and suggest bicycle registration as part of an
election platform. Regards,

wrap="">

Dear friend,
Idon't want to take your Legeslative (fire) but in the
US even though
most Drivers can be asses behind the steering wheel, especially
towards
cyclists, more legeslation and regulation for HPV's seems like a thing
of nonsense we
are already restricted on who we are and what we
ride.it is almost like a proposal to license
joggers!!!! think about
it for a bit, auto drivers are hated by Truckers , motorcyclist
cannot
stand auto drivers, and they all have tagged registered vehicles!!!
what makes you
think that anyone will respect the cyclist if they have
plates? I ran a 2mile steep run down
hill 30mph i was doing 45mph down
this hill, and i had drivers blaze past me at60+!!! This is
what you
call the "DOG" factor. Like a dog,the driver sees some poor schmuck on
his pedal
pusher burning no gas but buzzing better than his steel BOMB
and the idiot stomps the gas and
goes for the chase! Iguess to p rove
that he can go faster than the bike! BARK BARK BARK. And if
given a
chance he would try and bite you too!!!
DP BIKE-E CT
