  1. It's making me a little uneasy that we now have a number of bicycles in
the house that would be financially significant to replace. I was
reading Australian Cyclist today and spotted CycleCover as one of the
backers of the Cycling Promotion fund so I had a look at their policy.

    http://www.cyclecover.com.au/category38_1.htm

The terms around bicycles seem very generous, unbelievably so.

When we first moved in I got a quote for my Trek, it was an extra $261 a
year and the conditions on that were ludicrous. I didn't bother with
it. That catch with the Cyclecover offering is that you have to move
your home and contents insurance to them as well, apparently there's no
firm which does just cycle insurance out there. Given a $261 excess for
very limited cover on a $1500 bike the Cyclecover option is looking
    extremely attractive.

I know the question was asked six months or so ago; has anyone had any
experience in making a claim with Cyclecover? For all its faults our
current insurer is one of the better ones and pay out with little fuss.
One option I'm considering is using a quote from cyclecover, along with
their conditions, as a bargaining chip next time renewal comes around
    which isn't too far away.

After last year when I got my Ti/Campy roadie, an Avanti Corsa Pro roadie
and a trailer stolen one night, I found that RAC who we insured with were
jerks who use every trick in the book to get out of paying out. We ended up
getting less than $1500 payout in total - they were happy enought that that
was easily enough money for 2 bikes and a trailer!!!

So we switched to Wstern QBE which covers bikes up to $20k value for an
additional $73 per year, and covers them for a real replacement value.
Covers them away from home also, so long as they're locked to something
"immovable". And the best bit...saved about $100 p.a. on house and contents
even though we increased the values significantly as the old policies were
    kinda out of date.

    Cheers

I think I got a quote from Cyclecover after the last time this was
brought up, then I got a new quote from RACV (already had contents
insurance with them) and to add the bike worked out at an extra $50 per
year but the total was still $100 less than CycleCover.

That's interesting, Cyclecover is underwritten by QBE.

Yeah but with four bikes the maths changes a bit, especially as our insurer quoted an extra $261 per annum for theft only. No accident cove, no liability etc etc.

  8. Mine's about $90 per year on top of my household insurance with Allianz as a nominated item for any damage (unless i'm riding it) and theft anywhere in Australia. I just told them the make and model of bike and the value i want it insured for (in this case $2500). There is a $100 excess to pay but that's it.

BV picks up public liability through my membership to them.

I looked into this a couple of years ago......no one could match cyclecover for the coverage of bicycles and their rates for house/contents are pretty competitive. I had an old, squeaky and slow fat tyre bike stolen a while back. All I had to do was submit a receipt (didn't have one...t'was second-hand from trading post) or a photo of the bike to show I 'owned' it. Paid $100 excess and got a new one(and better spec'd bike because of 'new for old'😉. There were no hassles and very easy to deal with.

    Thanks Pat, that's good info.

Be aware that the BV insurance has a $1000 excess.
They don't publicise that very well ...

A friend accidentally backed over his brand new TT bike last year. 😠 Someone rang him up to wish him a happy birthday and he forgot that he'd left his bike leaning against the back of his van. Hung up from the call and proceeded to drive off - when he heard the terrible noise of gleaming new bike going under. 🙁 As it was brand new, it was hardly an "insurance job". 😉 He was devastated at the time.

He had taken out insurance with Cyclecover a few weeks before. He said they were excellent to deal with and paid out very quickly, without bother. One very happy and relieved customer. 🙂
