Ouch, that had to of hurt.

I remember buying a frame like that one time. Some local semi-pro had
bust his new bike in a race, similiar to the picture in the link and
the team sold it off as junk. $200 quid for a broken frame, but a full
xtr kit wasn't a bad deal at the time.

It probably didn't fail suddenly - I'm guessing that the weld separated,
he tried to hobble back to change the bike but then the top tube broke.
Hard to tell without a closer look at the fractures though.

I believe one of Helen Wafflycat's Bianchi stable suffered a similar fate

Mine developed a crack in the head tube. Not as dramatic - noticed well
before it got to catastrophic failure point :-)
