In my opinion, the best combination of those three factors is a Mavic Open Pro rim, laced to your hub of choice (Ultegra, Dura Ace, Chorus, Record) with DT Swiss or Wheelsmith spokes.

Custom built by an *experienced* wheel builder will be even better and still within the price range. Experience is important though. Don't ask the shop if their wheelbuilder is good - ask around in the group rides and talk to someone who has had wheels built or re-laced and see how happy they are with them.

If I remember correctly, you can get Sampy hubs with Shimano free-hubs, so you can run those even if your component choice is Shimano. Check around though, not everyone knows that you can do that. I know that it is at least true with the Campy wheel systems.

I just bought a set of Campy Neutrons, I have talked with a couple of guys that are riding them and they say they are good climbing and comfortable. I bought mine from www.bikesitalia.com for less than $600 American.😄

-- For all all-round, bulletproof wheelset, consider any of the Ksyriums. I've got the original design. Many buddies, say 10, ride the newer ones. With one exception, no one has had any problems or ever had to true them. One guy got attacked by a dog, which bit his rear rim and dented it, so he returned it for replacement

I weigh 170; my buddies range from 135-180. Most of us race only locally and occasionally, but all ride recreationally at moderate speeds (18-23 avg) over rolling terrain on decent road with some big hits.

One Ksyrium story: I did one of the TdF tourist tours in 2002, riding partial stages and many of the big climbs. One guy on our tour had a small crash, which bent two of his (newer) Ksyrium spokes significantly. I offered him two of my replacement spokes. He just bent his more or less back into place and continued to ride the remaining days and climbs. Wheel remained perfectly true.

I handed my Ksyriums to my teen-age son and ride Campy Eurus now. Ksyriums might be slightly more comfortable, but the Eurus have been rock solid and true for first 6000 miles despite taking some big hits.

I also have a pair of Campy Chorus/OPs that I seldom ride now. Comfortable wheels, but had to be trued every thousand or so. That might be more due to the builder than the components. They were less expensive.

Ksyriums can be had now in the mid $600s. Good luck.

I second PSR, except I'd go with chris king classic hubs. they'll save you about 1/4 pound over ultegra hubs, and are bomb proof. I've got them on 28 hole open pro cd rims with 14/15 double-butted dt spokes, alloy nipples, 3x, hand built. weigh 1685g. unlike some fancier heelsets, anyone can replace a broken spoke. I weigh 160, so you might opt for 32 hole rims/hubs.
