  1. I've been testing out different sports drinks during my rides.

    So far I've tried:
    Gatorade
    Poweraid
    Cytomax - Cytosport, Inc.
    Revenge - Champion

I used the same drink for 2weeks each while riding...wondering if anyone
else has had the same experience while using Cytomax. The other drinks
didn't really change how I felt during the ride. Cytomax (Tropical Fruit)
not only quenched my thirst but I felt great during and after the ride. I
know I sound like a commercial, but has anyone else have this experience?
What the hell is in Cytomax that makes me feel good?

    Thanks for all replies!

All I know is Accelerade is NASTY. Did a long, hot road ride yesterday (so
bottles, no 'bak), and took one with Accelerade along with my usual
    proprietary Gatorade/Tang blend.

After drinking only the GatorTang, I finally took a swig of the Aack-ade.
Tasted bad, but no big deal. Not 20 seconds later, a /major/ wave of nausea
swept over me; passed after a few minutes.

Bill "relegated to recovery only" S.

PS: Haven't used Cytomax in a long time, but always liked it. Can't say I
    ever "felt" it, however.

To get a fair comparison, I'd add plain old water to the lineup.

I do a double dose of lemon/lime gator powder in a bottle. Any of the stuff
you mention tastes like [censored] when its warm. So I double up the powder and
take one big swig then drink plain old watert to cover it up.

Fruit punch, I believe (too lazy to go look). It turns a creamy pink color,
    and tastes rather chalky.

Cytomax has worked very well for me too. Revenge is good, but I think I
    noticed Cytomax the most.
I think it's the amphetamines they put in it. Nothin' like some crank to
    make me crank.

Cytomax works the best for me... Cytomax uses alpha L-Polylactate which they
claim buffers the lactate acid in you muscles. From what I know about this
is that once the lactate builds up in the muscle to a certain point your
muscles start slowing down... By buffering the lactic acid not only does it
allow you to push harder before feeling the burn but also feel better while
providing that 6 - 8 percent carbo mix that your body can utilize best
during hard exercise and electrolytes ... http://www.cytosport.com/. How
much of this is hype and what is true I don't know. What I do know that for
me it works or there is a placebo effect (which also works for me)...

Many of my friends use Accelerade. Accelerade's claim to fame is that it
uses a 4:1 mix of carbs to protein. Studies have been done that suggest that
during hard exercise the body can better use the carbs when there is a 4:1
mix of protein http://www.accelerade.com/ (has to do with increasing muscle
glycogen synthesis). I tried using this product but the smell and taste got
the best of me... taste is important... If you do not like the taste you
will more than likely drink less. As a side note there have some more recent
studies that indicate that if there is enough carbs (1.2 g per kg of body
weight per hour) the effects of the added protein is diminished.

One other drink that I plan on trying in the near future is HEED by Hammer
Nutrition (I'm a big fan of there Hammer Gel)
    http://www.e-caps.com/products/detail.cfm?div=Products&cat=Hammer&det=Hammer%20H.E.E.D%2032%20Serving&sku=HEL32.
There are also using a lactate acid buffer (l-carnosine) and complex carbs
in the drink along with the standard electorlytes...

Water was mentioned as a drink to include in the lineup. Studies have shown
that the carbo drinks only were effective after 45 minutes of exercising...
So I guess if you doing something short don't waste your drink or money.

    DISCLAIMER:
Research all this stuff for yourself! I have provided a few links but there
is much more information on this stuff on the web. I am only telling you
what I have found in my research and it may be all wrong! Also note that the
studies I reference were found in High-Tech_Cycling by Edumnd R. Burke
(editor) Second Edition (very good book if you have geek tendencies towards
    biking).

    Good luck on your quest,

Double espresso straight at the start, one bottle of water, one bottle
of gatorade or whatever. For a longer ride I'll put a bottle in my
rear pocket too, and if I have the Camelbak it's all water. I had a
big tin of cytomax for a while and it was good. The label said all
kinds of stuff about reducing "perceived exertion" and etc, and if it
wasn't actually doing it, it got my head going with it. When your legs
and lungs are burning on a climb, thinking that the exertion is only
'perceived' and not really a big deal helps.

That's what I use probably 90% of the time and I have to agree it's great
    and the price is right.

If I'm trying to go as fast as possible (race) I find some of the "sucker
juice" helps keep me going when I'm exerting myself too hard to eat solid
food. But most of the time I'm not doing that, so water and snacks are fine.

I've been wondering about racing and food lately ... where do you keep
food? On my rides, I keep it in my camelbak, but what do you do when
you don't have the luxury of stopping?

I usually stick a couple of gels into the pocket or the leg of my shorts
(depending on which shorts) and try to consume them on a flat section where
I can just spin after about 10-15 Miles. I usually don't eat during a race,
but that's only good for the first 25 Miles or so. I haven't raced anything
longer but if I did I think I'd do it like I do with the gels. I know some
people who will unwrap bars and break them into bite-sized pieces ahead of
time for easy eating mid-race. I'd probably take that approach too if I ever
    drcide to do longer events.

Matt (not that serious about racing)

I don't go on rides where I don't have the luxury of stopping. Well, not
really but that doesn't sound like fun to me. I have been known to put a
gu-type packet in my sports bra for easy access. Or, a jersey pocket, but
that is the only kind of "food" I would do that with. Oh, I have a new pair
of baggies with a pocket that would work. Roadies stick things up the side
of their lycras all the time ( shut up, Sorni)

I wouldn't normally want to be in a forced march situation, either, but
I've been thinking about trying the beginner races. I won't know if I
like racing till I try it ...

(Yes, this from the slowest cyclist on the face of the earth. I'm
    getting better, though.)
