best rim for muni

i've used both the alex dx and the kris holm. i like the kh a little
better, i think it's wider, and thus less folding, etc. iirc the large
marge it going to be too wide of a rim for anything less than a 3.5
inch tire.

I run a Halo Contra / Duro Leopard on a 24" Large Marge. The tyre is
3" and runs perfectly. It is around 1/4" wider than the rim.

There is zero folding, even at really low pressure.

It is built on an '04 Onza hub/cranks and frame, I had to cut the brake
mounts off so the tyre would fit properly.

My 'Monzta' (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43342)
feels a bit heavy when I use it. Mind you I'm just used to doing
trials on my trials uni so after 15 minutes or so I'm used to the muni
and can jump on it no bother.

I always try to ride/hop up steep hills that I ride down on it and
usually make it, so it can't be that heavy.

Looks like we need a more specific definition of "best" to properly
answer the question. I know my Sun Double Wide is semi-indestructable,
but it's also heavy. So there needs to be a priority, or weighting, of
which elements are more important than which, and to what degree? I
keep the Sun on my MUni because I like knowing I can pretty much abuse
that wheel any way I'm willing to do without worrying about the wheel.
I just have to worry about me. :p

I had an Alex DX32 on a trials uni for quite a while. When that broke, I
replaced it with a KH rim. That held up to a decent beating, but not
good enough for me. It was already substantially bent within a few
weeks of having it built. Now I was riding the KH rim harder than usual
because i was learning to do handrails, but i still dont feel it held
(holds) up quite as well as the Alex.

Now all this time, ive had a muni with a Sun Doublewide rim on it. This
thing is 4 years old! I feed it some crazy muni rides and its my
street/trials vehicle of choice. I broke a pair of profiles on it. And
only now am i going to replace the rim. Guess what im going to replace
it with? Another Sun Double Wide.

The Sun rim is about double the price of the other two, but in my mind,
it has the best value.

I ramble so heres the gyst of all that [censored] i said:

Choice #1 Sun doublewide
Choice #2 Alex DX 32
Choice #3 KH

The Large Marge is not for me. At least not at this point.

I think that the Arrow Racing DHX is the strongest (obviously :p ), but
in my opinion it doesn't have a good braking surface, as the sidewalls
are not machined. I also believe that it is like 32 grams heavier than
a DX32, but I'm not much of a weight weenie.

If you are looking for a good rim with machined sidewalls for running
brakes, I'd say go with the tride and true DX32.

I've never ridden any other 24-26" rim on a unicycle, so I can't really
say how any others peform.

However, I have ridden the following on a DH bike: Atomlab Trailpimp,
Atomlab Aircorp, HALO SAS, and a Sun MAG-30. All of them are quite
strong, but the Aircorp is probably the weakest out of all of them,
whereas the Trailpimp is pretty much indestructable, along with the
MAG-30. Again, I have never heard of any of these being used on a
unicycle (minus the HALO), so I can't say how they perform.

For busting air, the Large Marge is not the ticket because of the
weight, and because it takes the excess spring--and rebound--out of the
tire. For LANDING drops, nimble turns and tractoring over bumps and
boulders, the LM is peerless.

My sense of it is that folks who use Muni to bust out trials and street
moves, or who are high flyers, the LM is a step back. For others into
cleaning single tracks and grim terrain, and don't want to be "used" by
the terrain, the LM is the shizzat.

A lot of folks don't like to "ride" a trail so much as they like to
session on the hard bits. I like to do both, and when I switch between
my 05 KH/Profile/DX 24" Duro and my Wilder/LM rig, I much prefer the
Wilder/LM. But that's because it fits my prefered style of riding, not
because it's any "better" than other set ups.
