Hi,

A question for all of you out there.

Where is the best place to train in the UK?

The reason i ask this is because stupidly my club has asked me to ride in the national U23 RR, and i have agreed. I come back from france on the 27th June and the race is on the 11th July. i will be training hard in the pyrenees and need to continue in this country! but where?

The RR is in north wales, so lots of hills(which i like!).
Would somewhere like Yorkshire be anygood or shall i try and practice on the race route?

Thanks

In Yorkshire and Peak District the biggest climbs are 330 vertical metres - Snake and Hole Moss which are near each other. There are 200 metre climbs everywhere.

Last year my training rides in this area in preparation for Marmotte were in the range 4000 to 4500 vertical metres (I guess over 100 to 120 miles).

Climbs of 10 to 20 minutes are useful as repetitions and almost better than 40-90min climbs on Ventoux, Tourmalet, Aubisque,Croix de Fer. English climbs are much steeper than Pyreneean which is quite useful for developing reserve power.

Tom Anderson who came 2nd in U23 t yrs ago after riding in Italy trained in this area, maybe contact him, altho I believe he's not racing anymore. Richard Hepworth of VS Cycles (5th Junior Peaks last week & 6min for NHC 2003) also rides in this area. The Mona club of North Wales (Richard Parry?)have lots of experience of Alpine climbs and riding in N Wales.

North Devon coast - where Exmoor meets the sea. There are lots of 1 in 4 climbs here (25%) gainning about 1000 - 1500 vertical feet.

When you get to North Wales find a place called Abergele (situated near Towyn) and ask someone for the route to the chest hospital. The said road is quite a climb, though I haven't done it myself yet. Maybe later you can share how you got on since the road takes you way out into the country up and up.
I did a huge climb myself in the U.K. yesterday in Staffordshire with a female cyclist. We both went up a 10% gradient together on a long, long route that lessened to 8% after some distance. The lady with me did herself proud as well and was a terrific climber.
By the way, Buxton is also good for your needs with plenty of hills and Roman ruins to visit.
