As you've found, there are many different training programs, but there's
no one plan that's right for every runner. Some of the traditional
programs require long runs at 45 seconds or a minute per mile slower than
your projected marathon pace. One of the new ones requires fewer weekly
miles but has you run much faster than this. Personally, I can't run a
marathon much faster than I run for a long training run, but that's just
    me.

The best plan, especially for someone who hasn't run a few marathons, is
to join a training group, perhaps one that is raising money for a charity.
Not only do you get the experience of a coach, but you get to talk to
other runners and find out what works for them. In addition, doing long
runs with other people makes the run much easier than slogging it on your
    own!

I like training groups, but the charity thing adds another level of
work that someone may not want to do. Also, the coaching for these groups
varies so much. There are some places where the "coach" is merely a person
that says "we are meeting at Memorial Park at 7am to run, remember to raise
    money this week."

I've been running off and on for the past 5 years. For the past 6 mnths
I've been running about 30 miles per week with a 10 mile long run. I'd
like to start training for a marathon, but there are so many books and
plans out there, that it's hard for me to pick one that is right for
    me. Any suggestions?

Bad idea. Trace headers, and block those.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and
more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day
the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the
White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
    H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
"Anyone with degrees from Yale and Harvard is presumed to be intelligent,
but George W. Bush has managed to overcome that presumption."

  4. The longer you prepare, the better, in my opinion.
(If one is an elite racer, too long of a build up may
br detrimental, but most of us arent.)
Now is a good time start thinking of next autumn's
races. Build up to two hours runs every other weekend
through winter and do some three hours next summer.
I think most of those "zero to marathon in three months"
programs are somewhat dangerous if one plans to
    make runninga lifelong hobby.

Since it changes its alias so often, I just use a rule to permanently
delete all mail with the phrase "As democracy is perfected." That works
pretty well. If the sig changes, I'll just keep adding new ones.

TBR is such a moron! Funny how he stopped using that sig almost
immediately after I posted this. Any idiot can tell that I post from
Google Groups. There is no filtering in Google Groups. I just posted
that to get him to get rid of his sig. hahaha
