  1. What's the best walking related present you've received this year?

To my surprise, my sister bought me a new mobile phone, which I badly needed
(the old one has a broken screen and I rarely ever use it) and it's 20g
    lighter to boot!

    It's a Nonie 5140i - one of those all-singing all-dancing phones, that does
a hundred different things including voice dialling, email, web browsing,
sound recorder, sound meter, camera, video, FM radio, alarm clock,
stopwatch, calculator, games, organiser & training software, heart rate
monitor link, thermometer, torch, compass, GPS, altimeter, metal detector,
infrared scanner, 10MP images in RAW mode, laser beam, fire lighter, can
boil a cup of tea, and even converts into a trekking pole and a telescope!
    ;-)

Okay, I admit to a slight exaggeration there, but everything up to the GPS
is true! Actually I don't have the GPS feature, that's an optional extra,
but I have everything preceding that. So now I really can justify leaving
    my compass at home!

Of course, I'll probably never use most of the things in it, but it's nice
to have them just in case. I'll probably get most use out of the torch and
thermometer when camping! So I won't just be carrying dead weight.

Actually, it's specifically designed as an outdoor/exercise model. A niche
market admittedly, but that's my niche!

I may even use it to phone someone occasionally. It has a number of preset
modes, including an interesting "outdoor" mode, in which all sounds and
lights seem to be turned on and up to full volume! Presumably for maximum
annoyance to other walkers! Luckily there are preset modes that I can fine
    tune.

Why does it have a sound meter you may ask? Well apparently it's used to
detect the volume of one's surroundings so that you can use an "auto-volume"
setting which matches your environment. So it will turn up the volume if
you're in a loud pub, but presumably lower it if you're out on the hill,
which seems far more suitable than the max volume outdoor default.

It now means I can *walk* with all my camera gear in a rucksack (easy to
bear the weight), but with the added advantage that I can sling it around my
shoulder to remove my camera without having to take the bag off (as with a
normal rucksack). It doesn't hold a huge amount of gear, but it's currently
doing a good job of holding my 5D, 100-400 lens, 100mm 2.8 macro lens, and
50mm 1.8 lens. Plus there's plenty of space left for accessories or even
    another lens.

Why do you not post with your usual offensive sig?
It transgresses all decency as can be seen.
Brian Hamilton Kelly was a much respected poster in demon.local
    who died recently.

Here is Rooney's normal sig in demon.local after Brian's death.

It has caused Janie, his partner for many years, deep distress.

  13. Ah ha! If I remember correctly (possibly) you pooh poohed mobile phones on
the hills a few years back on this ng, and I was suggesting that it allowed
one the freedom to roam the hills away from the office. Something which I
was doing then, and something that has been well lacking this year. So, I
have a New Year's Resolution, which involves hills, mobile phone, and
freedom! None of my Xmas presents could really be be described a walking
related, and the selection of sample malt whiskies is probably walking
unrelated, so the best walking related Xmas present that I didn't have
would have been a small replacement for the Canon 300d which quite frankly
is too big and heavy too lug around.

Permission to skive off Christmas to meet Phil and Judith :-)

All other walking related presents throughout the year tend to be from
me to me so probably don't really count.

You could take one out! I have no problems in the Surrey Hills on Vodafone.

BTW Siemens also do a tough phone; I can't find a stockist. I'm trying
to talk the phone company out of a 5140i as my 5100's battery is dying.

No-one does a phone that'll survive my other hobby. None of them float,
    or survive immersion.
