Best bike for the money.

Now that depends a whole lot on what you're looking for in a bike, and what you have to spend. In that price range, I'd be exploring custom steel frames and hand-built wheels.

For me, best bike for best price might be something with 105 or Ultegra group. Best price implies you're not looking to pay for the "bling" factor. Actually I might buy that BD Carbon Record bike for $1495. But if you want some "bling", that may not be your top choice. Durace and Cervelo carbon sound like you want "bling" and not best bike for best price. Maybe I'm missing something in how you phrased your question.

Steel is good, but I'd go for carbon fiber, or maybe titanium. But it's all personal preference. Exactly what type of bike do you have?

my first bike getting back into road riding was a CAAD4 R1000 by cannondale. it was very fast, stiff, light. my nest bike was a felt f65. it was a bit softer ride with its carbon seat stays but seemed a bit slower. my next bike was a monocoque marin stelvio. extremely light stiff and fast going up hills- better than the cannondale. now i'm riding a litespeed firenza- the best of the lot. it is stiff light and smooth. it feels as smooth as my steel schwinn traveler that i now use for my trainer. so my vote for you is to go for titanium if you can afford it. the other thought is the felt scandium bike. i've never seen or riden one. it may be a weight advantage but i don't know about the ride quality.

as for price, i only buy from ebay. when i'm in the market for a new bike i search everyday through the road bikes up for auction and only bid on bikes from sellers with 50+ positive feedback 98% positive or better- never been burned. i paid $1250 for my brand new 2006 firenze on ebay- that's for a full bike with all of the stock ultegra components. good luck.

In my case that's a Surly Pacer with Shimano 105 components.

+ 1 for Surly! I've got the cross check cyclocross. It's pretty sweet. If your interested in one go with a size smaller than what you would normally ride. Mine was pretty stretched out. Nice ride, nice steal!
