  1. I lost the thread, so I have to start again.

    I e-mailed Emil Kazez, who is in his office preparing his lecture for physics 445 or some such,
    about the following post from J-O Newborg:

    There's no such thing as "Bernoulli Lift" in the literature, because Bernoulli didn't study lift.

    Daniel Bernoulli did not even wrote an equation!

    Leonard Euler wrote the one dimensional version of his 3D equations in 1754 and called it "Bernoulli
    equation"!

    Equations does not explain the Physics very well, as they are all parts of mathematical models.

    Action/reaction is the physics and Bernoulli explains that physics very bad!

    I don't who wrote the B equation first. Where an air stream speeds up the pressure decreases,
    airplane wings are not flat in order to take advantage of this. It is hard to think that B
    anticipated or worked to improve air lift, however, it is still reffered to as the B effect. Even
    though Newtons laws of motion and his third law (action=reaction) are at the basis of all
    classical mechanics, there is no reason to think that he anticipated the B effect/equation.

    According to Professor Dooley, Millerville University, it will take one generation to understand
    Bernoulli equation and that " high velocity does not causes low pressure".

    Professor Dooyley writes down the page:

    "One confusing detail about Bernoulli's equation needs discussion: In elementary treatments it is
    often stated that, because of Bernoulli's equation, high velocity causes low pressure. This is like
    saying that the high velocity of bullet leaving a gun caused the low pressure of the gas outside the
    barrel of the gun. The field treatment embodied in Euler's and Bernoulli's equations does not
    discuss cause and effect. The field view tells us what parameters "go together" without implying
    that one causes the other. If we trace back to the roots of these equations in Newton's laws, we can
    extract a cause and effect statement: Forces are said to cause accelerations. In the same sense,
    pressure gradients cause changes in velocity; not the other way around."

    In real aerodynamic books one never finds the expression "Bernoulli Effect"!

    Wings of all new airliners are almost flat on upper surface!

    That´s called "Supercritical Wings" and they save their operators (as example airbus340 ) some 15 %
    over older aircrafts (Boeing 747-400)!

    Any one can look for themself here how new airliner wings look:

    They now have longer airflow path below the wing compared to to upper surface.

    Daniel Bernoulli did in fact study fluid dynamics and was seminal in putting hydrology on a sound
    scientific foundation. He did not study "lift", per se, because the most important fluid dynamics
    problems of his day revolved around sailing vessels rather than powered flight.

    Leonard Euler was Bernoulli's foremost student. He named the well-known pressure law after his
    mentor because it derived directly from Bernoulli's earlier hydrologic studies. So even though
    Bernoulli himself did not derive his famous equation, he nevertheless laid the groudwork which led
    to its discovery by Euler. Physicists have a long and illustrious tradition of honoring their
    predecessors by naming laws which they have discovered after those on whose work theirs is based.
    May it ever be so!

    It seems to be a misunderstood mixing between the physical real "Venturi effect" and
    "Bernoulli Effect"!

    In a "Venturi Pipe" it´s only the divergent part that creates lower pressure due to "The Coanda
    effect" and centrifugal forces!

    The inlet/convergent part of a Venturi Pipe works like the Windsock seen at every airport!

    The Windsock does not behave like it should according to Continuity equation and Bernoulli Theorem!

    The harder the wind blows the higher the airpressure gets in the convergent/more narrow part of
    the Windsock!

    We don't need to go that far. If I enter "Bernoulli Effect" at google, I get lots of references to

    the Bernoulli Effect.

    They write this:

    "BERNOULLI EFFECT The pressure is lower in a moving fluid than in a stationary fluid. This effect is
    called the Bernoulli effect. If you put the convex side of a spoon into a smooth stream of water
    from the faucet, you will feel the spoon pulled into the stream. The higher pressure outside the
    moving fluid pushes the spoon into the lower pressure water.

    A ball balances in a stream of air from a blower. The ball is strongly held in the lower pressure
    stream of air".

    Does this mean that the pressure in the airstream in the jetblast behind a F16 Fighting Falcon
    running it´s afterburner?

    NO!

    The total pressure gets very high due to the high dynamic pressure!

    So Bernoulli and his effect failed!

    This is a description of "The Coanda Effect", not any so called Bernoulli effect!

  8. I like your comment, but it wasn't me who said there is no such thing; it was Newborg. Bernoulli's
    levitation or lift is alive and well and the subject of an article in the issue of Journal of Modern
    Physics that just came out a couple days ago. I did not read it. It's not my subject and not really
    the subject of the guy who's shovelling the snow right now. His field is elementary particles theory
    and I am reminded that doesn't include the subject of this thread. Oh well, I tried.

    Leonard Euler and Daniel Bernoulli were both students of Daniels father Johan Bernoulli.

    Daniel went to St Petersburg with his brother. After his brothers death, Leonard was asked to go
    Petersburg as company for Daniel.

    At age 34 in 1734, Daniel showed his father Johan some manuscript of Physics. From that day on
    Johann never talked to Daniel again. They became enemies for the rest of his life!

    First Leonard Euler never was a student to Daniel Bernoulli, but both Leonard and Daniel were the
    students of Johan Bernoulli, Daniel father!

    In 1738 Hydrodynamika he did not wrote any equation at all, because that mathematics was not
    available in 1738. It was in 1754 Lagrange and Leonard Euler presented the 1 dimensional equation as
    a special case of Eulers 3 D equations for ideal/perfect fluids. Ideal/perfect fluid is a physical
    non existing, mathematical constructed/ modelled fluid!

    All this history can be read in several books like:

    A History of Aerodynamics: And Its Impact on Flying Machines by John D. Jr Anderson (Author), Jr.,

    This is a very interesting book. Prof. Anderson writes about "Bernoulli Equation":

    "None of the family Bernoulli, father Johann or son Daniel, wrote the
    s.k Bernoulli equation, they did not even understand "Pressure property of Point".

    It was Euler/Lagrange who set up the equation in 1754, 16 years after Daniels book "Hydrodynamika"!
