  1. Ok, well I have been doing some drops around town here, and I was
    looking at my right crank the other day, and in the spot were the crank
    connects to the hub, its bent. I can't take the crank off, but I was
    wondering...if I replace the hub and crank, is there a certain kind
    (splined and the others..? I have a bedford off-road 24". Thanks

  3. Hubs fall into one of two categories:
    Splined or non splined. In general splined hubs are much stronger and
    usually have stronger cranks too. They are also far more expensive.

    Some standard hub replacement options are as follows:

    NON SPLINED

    (All hubs listed below use bearings with an outside diameter of 40mm and
    use Japanese Industry square tapers)

    -Standard chrome taiwanese hub Cheap, nasty and easily bent, or
    sheared through. Flange to flange distance is narrower than others.
    Crank attaches via nut that screws on to the axle

    -Suzue hub. Good quality Japanese hub that ships on unicycles like
    Miyata. Will stand a fair bit of abuse but still possible to shear
    through the axle. Crank attaches via nut that screws on to the axle.

    -Unicycle.com Chromo hub. Tested as stronger than the suzue hub. Crank
    attaches via bolt that screws into the axle.

    If you go with any of the above replacements you will need to find some
    good cranks. These tend to be very expensive and still likely to break.
    Aluminium cranks usually last the longest but have a tendency to need
    continuous tightening. Kooka make some good cranks for tapered axles.

    SPLINED (generally more splines = better)

    -Profile hub, 48 splined hub made by profile racing. Uses 40mm or 42mm
    bearings. Recognized as virtually bomb proof. Very good quality but
    very expensive. They come with a lifetime warranty. Good choice of
    crank lengths too.

    -KH/Onza hub, a new hub (32 or 36 spline I think) resulting from a
    collaboration between Kris Holm, Onza and with input from Roger Davies.
    This could be the new standard in unicycle hubs and may be an
    improvement on Profile.

    -Onza hub (old style). 36 spline hub made by onza. Some early
    versions had problems with slop. Long since sorted out I believe. Uses
    42mm bearings.

    -KH hub (old style). 8 splines and uses 42mm bearings. Is has been the
    standard on KH unicycles until now. Again a number have had axle slop
    problems. This can be fixed and their are plenty of threads on how to
    do so on rsu.

    -QuaX, German brand with 10 splines. Ships as standard on their offroad
    unicycles.

  4. Here is the latest specs on the KH-Onza crankset:

    Redesigned for 2005, the KH-Onza crankset is both stronger and lighter
    weight than its predecessors. Product details:

    Cranks: High strength, oversize CrMo tubing, 1/2” Q-factor (outwards
    flare). High precision press-fit onto 36 spline axle, secured with an
    ingenious new end-bolt split-washer combination that eliminates
    creaking.

    Hub: Hub flanges are CNC machined 7000 series aluminum, carefully
    shaped to maximize wheel strength. Each flange is machined separately
    and press-fit onto a 20mm CrMo splined axle with the same high strength
    spline interface used for the cranks. This new design approach
    increases durability while reducing weight by removing unnecessary metal
    from the center of the hub.
