Early 70's CCM tandem with a bendix tandem hub laced13 ga spokes. Clutch will not engage. My original plan was to replace the wheel but I am not finding a suitable and reasonably low-cost alternative. 120mm spacing, no brake bosses. The coaster brake was the only brake system on this one. I was promised that if I fixed it that the customer would only use it gently and never on hilly terrain.
So, is there any service possible for this hub or is it a lost cause? Could it be the old, dried grease? Never had the pleasure of working on this hub before. I did find diagrams of other Bendix models.

Crack it, clean it, assemble with hi-temp grease and it should be good to go. That means grease the brass brake shoes as well as the bearings. Probably has dried grease keeping the clutch from engaging as I doubt that a bendix hubbed tandem would have major mileage. Parktool.com has basic instructions on how to service.
On reread it seems a little unclear--was that a tandem with a 2 spd hub or just a regular ole' single speed coaster hub? The two-speed ones are pretty neat, I used to ride my granny's bike with one. It was very high tech: aluminum handlebars and wooden grips. :-P
Just make sure you keep track of what you've taken off an in what order. Some parts of the Bendix hubs look the same, though they are not. We also have exploded diagrams and rebuild tips on our site.
