    Hi NG

    I am off to Sunny Fort william Sunday to walk the route
    up Big Ben via the Carn Mor Dearg Arete- horsehoe of
    northern corrie.

    Has anyone been there the last few days that can give me an
    idea of conditions...snow etc etc

    Only got one day there to walk (Monday) weather dont look to
    clever.. but we all know what mountains are like anyway 😉)

    Any advice on this route would be gladly received (my first
    time there)

    Steve, just posted about this route recently. I went for
    this route about 18 months ago, the weather is the main
    difficulty. The plan was to go up the tourist route and then
    at the path junction head east and into Coire Leis to the
    CIC Hut/Mountain Rescue Post. We reached Carn Mor Dearg
    without too much difficulty, just a long slog up heathery
    slopes topping out onto the bouldery top and managed to
    locate the cairn. The visibility was very poor and added to
    the wind, a decision was made to forego the Arete. The wind
    had blown the both of us over at several times clambering up
    to CMD so perhaps this decision was the wisest! We went back
    via the ascent route to the tourist path and at the fork
    decided to go for Ben Nevis, we did so to find the top in
    cloud which is probably usual conditions and very windy. A
    quick snack and photo and then down. A long day and unusual
    route to get the two. I still fancy the planned route in
    decent weather.

    Hi Steve

    Did the Ben, Stob Ban, Anoch Mor over Easter period there
    was still quit = a bit of snow upwards from Mcleans Steep.
    Good Friday the thaw was on, = Anoch Mor was a wet
    sponge!=20

    Just take care with the navigation, and respect the Arete if
    its too = windy give the Arete a miss. Call in at Nevis
    Sport in Fort William for = upto date conditions the staff
    are always helpfull.and have a pint at = the Ben Nevis Inn
    on the way back!

    I think a better approach to the CMD Arete is from the Glen
    Nevis road end up to Steall, then Coire Giubsachan and the
    east ridge of Carn Mor Dearg. If you need to get back to the
    same start point you can descend via Coire Eioghainn and the
    waterslide (very steep).
