Beloki is doubtful, but it's still rather early to draw any conclusions for
Jan or Lance, especially Jan.

I tend to feel the same way about JB. I actually wonder if that fall
didn't ruin his career, only time will tell. I disagree with your
acessment of JU, however, he's alway been slow off the blocks early
season. At the risk of reprtition July is 4 months away.

Does anyone remember at what speed did Beloki crash?

Beloki is having a lot of problems related to fear and pain from his
extensive injuries. I think that come July he'll be past most of them but
I'd be surprised to see him in the running his first year back from those
sorts of injuries. But obviously he'll be a force next year.

Jan is right on target. Lance is SLOWWWWWWW right now. I don't know what
that will translate into come July.

was mental? JB may be physically ready to ride the bike but a crash
like that could really put a mental block in place....

Was it the Criterium International that was his first race back? And he
crashed. It didn't look all that bad to me ... kind of a low-speed affair.
But he took a nice tumble into a ditch. I'm sure that messed with his head
pretty well. He lost 16 minutes on the stage IIRC.

Considering that hip surgery leaves you with significant metal
hardware inside your leg, I can sympathize with his desire not to
crash and have his leg broken while attached to this metal (that
injury is always worse than the original). I had this stainless
steeel hardware in my own leg for 18 months until I had it taken out
this past summer.

As far as "muscular" strength, my own leg was close to 100% within 6
months. I had issues with propriaception though, and had slight
difficulty doing stupid little things like balancing and navigating my
way around ottomans and chairs in the house.

I was warned by the doc after surgery #1 not to subject myself to
activity that subjected me to a fall of the same kind (meaning, no
bike racing)...And after surgery #2 (hardware removal) not to ride in
fast groups, as the holes in my bone needed to fill-in and then
solidify and calcify. I am now allowed back to the bike at 100% of my
former activity level.

Beloki injured himself far worse than I did, so I have no idea what
kind of issues he's grappling with. I will admit I'm considering not
returning to the peloton though.
