In an event won in a short 4:28 (3.4km), by Periero of Phonak (second to Savoldelli of Discovery, third to Garzelli of Liquigas), Beloki was 53 seconds slower, in a distant last place! The next-to-last rider finished 36 second back.
This seems like a notable gap to me. Only a handful of riders were more than 30 seconds back. Heras was 27 back, Cunego was 21 back.
It seems like Beloki has yet to recover; I wonder if he will have any results at all this year.

I saw that too. Belokis form is bad, but did he fall? I didn't see the race, but that time was so bad.

his handlebar came loose and he had to stop to change bikes.. he's still a mystery.
Hmm, in the third, uphill stage, Beloki was 18:29 back. That seems too far back to claim that one is slow because not peaking yet. Heras was 1:39 back, Savoldelli and Garzelli almost 5 mintues back. But Mancebo was 13 minutes back.

Yes he is weak. It`s normal that riders for Giro are in top shape now while riders for Tour are still far away from it. Maybe there`s the answer for bad shape of Mancebo, Beloki and some others too. I`m wondering what`s with Voeckler. Almost 25 mins back and almost with Petacchi. He lost 14 mins in yesterday`s stage and he was after the peloton sometimes at Paris - Nice as well.

Agree in general, which is why I put Heras in my list, since he is riding for the Tour yet is competitive here. Note that Beltran, who presumably will again support Armtrong, also rode well today. It seems to me that, even taking into consideration the lack of a peak, 18 minutes is waaaaay back for someone focusing on the Tour.

I was there watching the stage, I rode it during the morning and what I can say is that the climbs were *really* hard. Look at Erik Dekker, at the top he was leading at the first passage , at the second (i.e. at the finish) he was 20 (twenty!!!) minutes back. IMHO if one is not in great shape it's very easy to get a lot of minutes in stages like that.

Read the race coverage. He had a mechanical and had to change bikes. He still is way at the end of the peleton in the finishes of the last days though.
