Are you looking at these panniers for your Haluzak? I too am
struggling w/ how to load up my beloved Horizon for touring. You might
be interested in Terra Cycles soon to be announced solution; the
"easyreacher" underseat rack. They've already made these beauties for
other bents and the ones for Haluzak's are going to be available soon.
Check them out at terracycle.com or better yet, give 'em a call (I just
did) and tell them how enthusiastic you are about getting some (might
expedite the fabrication process).

I was able to rig up two smaller panniers I picked up cheaply from
Performance on my 'zak seat. The key is that the top seat cross member
consists of a straight portion flanked on each side by portions
that angle out. I tied little loops in parachute cord on these
angled portions to receive the top hooks on the panniers. Then I
used two longer cord pieces to connect the pannier bottom hooks to
the lower seat angle stiffener. This way, the panniers angle out
away from the rear tire. One thing though is if I don't
have it set up right and/or stuff way too much in, side of the rear
tire rub become an issue. The setup is made hard by the fact that
this bike sinks down a bit when you are on it changing clearances.
I've used this setup for thousand of miles quite successfully, but
note that I'm a mimimalist tourer.

This is all of course because the Haluzak performs poorly with any
weight greater than 10 pounds on a rear rack.

I switched to an Aerotrunk but unfortunately it can't be mounted
on a Haluzak without it hitting the top of the rear tire (with anything
other than a token load). So I use the Aerotrunk for the slight
speed improvement and to hold a few day trip items but it is unsuitable
for my long touring. One other thing I do is take a waist pack and route
its belt through the seat under the fabric and rest it perpendicular on
the main tube above the bottom water bottle cage mount between the seat
and the
rear seat recline support tube. Here I keep my tools and other
repair parts because it is a good place to put weight.

I was interested but "available soon" has been their claim forever. I'm
working now on fabbing up my own version--it's not that hard.

What you are looking at is a set of Radical Bags. Far lighter than
conventional panniers, and depending on the bike, seat, and seat height,
you probably won't need a rack (another weight saving)
